I'm honestly surprised they're even trying 5 years later, the first season has to be one of the more infamous fall-offs of modern anime

Trying what?
S1 managed to succeed at increasing sales of the source and apparently was itself economically successful, which is what people in charge care about. I dropped S1 myself but I know any criticisms I have are pointless. People should stop thinking success or failure are determined by opinions on the internet.

A success wouldn't take half a decade to follow up on lmao

Well, for anyone who checks out season 2, I hope it's an improvement from the first season.

I personally will not be coming back.

You know that's not true.
The anime industry is not so accommodating that they can just drop everything and immediately start an unplanned sequel when these studios are usually booked years in advance. Even putting that aside, production situations and making sure the staff can be reassembled cause the timing of anime sequels to vary quite a lot. You can't just say "sequel took a long time, so show wasn't successful", that literally doesn't make sense.

It was announced soon after the end of S1, actually. But staff and studio are not always immediately available. In fact, taking longer is evidence of the sequel not being planned from the start, because the staff was getting busy with other projects and didn’t plan for the sequel in their schedule
And production isn’t gonna give more seasons to something they see as a failure

Preplanned sequels that air regardless of success happen faster because the staff is hired to work on them from the start and plan their schedules accordingly. This wasn’t the case here

I remember this show it is one of the very few that I found offensively incompetents after the detective actually "died" maybe its just a really bad adaptation but man did I hate season 1
