It would be cool to get something about what the deal is with the original Asuka and not the Shikinami clone

Shikinami was devastating to me, from a travesty of writing perspective. Anno lost all my trust with Rebuild. That he still controls Asuka's fate, and will continue to put her through it no doubt, after everything, is demoralizing lol.

Wait a minute, it's been a long time since I watched the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series, in fact, I've only watch each of the movies when they were officially released in video/streaming and I've only seen them once, so I don't remember a lot of what happened in the first ones, if I'm not mistaken I do remember that in the second Rebuild movie Asuka took Touji's place in piloting the fourth Eva unit, did she die and was later cloned, or am I mistaken what happened to Rei who was a clone in the third and foruth movies
Still, I do agree that it felt like Asuka's role felt smaller in the Rebuild movies from what I remember. Now that it's been years since the the release of the last Rebuild of Eva movie and almost 20 years since the release of the first one, what is the general consensus about the tetralogy as a whole? I'm not the biggest Evangelion fan out there, I saw the originla series twice, I saw all of the movies, and I collected the manga adaptation, but I fell like people don't talk about the Rebuild movies that much, despite the fact that they were very successful in the Japanese box-office, though I also find it interesting that it seems there's not a lot of fanart of Mari, I mean, I bet there's a lot, but not as much compared to Rei, Asuka and even Misato.

Shikinami was Shikinami from the start; she was wounded in the Unit 4 fight, but she didn't die. Shikinami was also a clone from the start. Souryuu is not in/(is missing from?) Rebuild, which is a large part of my grief with it. is the implication meant to be that Souryuu once existed and the Shikinamis are the clones? it isn't said. That it isn't said is so aggravating to me, as I love Asuka. What in the world happened to her. Why was this girl, made for these movies, the new Asuka, cloned to begin with? What happened to the original girl, what was her name, her story, and what happened to the failed clones? we've seen what happened to some other failed clones, Reis, in the original series, but nothing but bare implications for the Shikinamis. well, I wanted to explain a bit why Souryuu not being present bothers me, more than just that I simply missed her (miss her?) Moving along... T~T
I don't know the general opinion for Rebuild either but.. I'd guess it's surely significantly less than the esteem for Eva original (How can anything be more, broadly speaking? with Eva being such a massive phenomenon.) and perhaps we can even use the lack of Mari art as a piece of evidence lol. If I may share an anecdote: I'm a late Eva fan... I even thought Mari was an original character, not watching the series till 2017. I did watch the first Rebuild before the series, when it was released, and thought it was a horrible, ugly snoozefest, and I was so confused because isn't Eva supposed to be incredible? Rebuild is worse in every conceivable way, truly... Got it straightened out for myself upon getting to the series. Well, anyway, if artists loved Rebuild and its cute new pilot, they'd probably draw it more. Just a guess based on that one little thing, without getting into more possible reasons why it's less loved lol...

I loved the Rebuild films, and my take on Asuka was... (If I recall correctly...)
Considering the Rebuild story is a sequel to the original series, where there have been many Instrumentalities and many resets of the world repeating events in general, but with divergences, the original Asuka from NGE did exist... in that cycle... Perhaps it was even the original.
There have been many MANY cycles since then. A meta-commentary on NGE as a franchise with spin-offs and alternative versions in different media.
The Shikinami Asuka of Rebuild's cycle (implied to be the final one), was a clone made from several potentially viable ones from the woman who was Asuka's mother, likely to have a pilot very compatible with Eva-02.
Even the manga by Sadamoto had a spin on Asuka where she was conceived by IVF using genetic material from partners considered to be genetically elite, a point she boasts to Shinji about as to how she was intended to be a superior person, and implying therefore a better Eva pilot. But really her mother and her husband had trouble conceiving leading to him having an affair, which led to her mother trying to conceive with someone "better."
In the original NGE, Asuka was conceived the old-fashioned way by her mother and father, but later the Eva project destroyed her mother's sanity permanently, and Asuka's father started an affair with one of the doctors, leading to Asuka's mother's condition worsening to the point of suicide.
Asuka was always fated to a tragic childhood in every cycle. The Rebuild was simply giving us another incarnation; a cycle that Shinji finally ended.

@jdnation
There are absolutely aspects of Rebuild I don't remember well. After finishing it once, I knew I loathed it and planned on living staying away from it, but, wanting to clarify some things and not willing to delegate that learning to anyone's summaries online, I tried rewatching... Eva's famous for physical reactions, right? dread coupled with nausea stopped me halfway through the second movie lol. haven't tried again since..
Point being I have no knowledge of there being canonically many Instrumentalities/cycles/resets. so yeah that consideration isn't present as i think of it though that sure sounds important! >o< maybe i should just read a transcript of the movies to get it straight....
Am def familiar with Eva as a franchise being revamped, since inception (With how the manga and anime went in different directions, as you reference.) and on into the future, with Anno even saying he wants/plans for it to be like Gundam with different creators and so Eva just lives and expands forever. However, this, "Asuka was always fated to a tragic childhood in every cycle." is unbearably cruel to me. i'm in the "Eva is a masterpiece" boat and it's only one of two anime I'd say that about. EoE is a horrorshow, unquestionably tragic. to loop those characters into a fate like that forever............ not only cruel and gross, but weakens the original too.... I can't think of a good reason to do it... "For the story!" WRITE A DIFFERENT STORY. LET HER REST IN PEACE, DAMN.
Now, of course, and like you say, Rebuild was supposed to be the "beautiful goodbye." The happy end. Imo, it was poorly done in a long myriad of ways but mostly and relevantly: It's too obviously contrived lol.. Shinji's personality was altered to make him the hero, because he wasn't that person. That's why Eva is so good, and why Rebuild is so weak. They just gave him hero hair and strength he didn't have before so we end up with a very typical story- and which somehow still manages to screw Asuka, though, even in Good End. i have no trust.

Well Rebuild as a whole was leading up to meta-commentary by and about Anno, and as with End of Eva, Anno likes to give a personal F-U to the fans.
It is all a personal resolution about Anno at a different time of his life compared to the 2 endings of the original NGE.
The cycles part is not spelt out, but strongly hinted at. The characters themselves don't know it is happening, with the exception of Kowaru who rises up from one of several coffins on the moon (that probably implies previous versions of him) stating that he'll make Shinji happy "this time," as well as other stronger visual cues such as the presence of many many Unit-01s like statues climbing together towards an apex during an instrumentality attempt suggesting previous attempts. And the Rebuild naming convention of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.0+1.0 are taken from musical notation cues that go to 3 then repeat.
