This first episode was everything I hoped it would be. An absurd premise played completely straight, Patrick Seitz being a total badass, hardcore chicken porn...well okay maybe just the first two. 11/10, no notes.

I liked it but I worry that the joke will wear out fast. I'm definitely gonna stick around until it does though. One of my favorite shows last year was May I Ask For One Final Thing?, another show that got a lot of mileage off the simple gag premise of "this character is doing action-y things that don't fit inside what you'd expect", so if Rooster Fighter has a fraction of that other show's combo of action & humor, I'm in for the long haul.

Uh, wait, I thought this was all about cock fighting. So the chicken will also fight humans?

The rooster feels like he’s going to run into the Aqua Teen Hunger Force one week. Still, the first episode was great, but the trick is keeping up the momentum since the joke can wear thin.

Counterpoint to episode 2: It took me all of a minute to decide that Piyoko is precious and I would absolutely die for her.

Piyoko as a character feels alright to me but I agree that that voice is just a little too squeaky. Perhaps in future episodes she won't talk as much and I'll be more receptive of it, but uh... well, this episode was rough to get through.

I wanted to like this show but I must say... the ugly character design, the awful CGI and the lame action scenes make it hard

Yeah. I had the same problem with the English voice of the sidekick so I wonder if I should try another language.

^It'll time some time for me but I get it, I had a similar issue with Patty in the Devil May Cry anime but the rest in that dub were good enough to stick with it.

Ep 4
I appreciated that she pointed out that her eggs were unfertilized. But that does raise the question: what about the eggs she laid after her and Kenji's wild night of passion? She could have laid as many as 5 to 10 fertile eggs after that. What did she do with them? Are there flocks of little Kenchicks running around out there from his many one-nighters, or is he shooting blanks?

Man, it's a shame this series isn't garnering more discussion, because as far as I'm concerned it's an absolute goddamn blast. Easily one of the highlights of my week. Special shout-out to the whole dub cast for understanding the assignment and knocking it out of the park.
| Quote: | | Some weeks, I can't really tell if Rooster Fighter is just leaning too far into its camp factor, or if it's just getting high off its own supply of manufactured drama. This is one of those weeks. Does it suddenly want viewers to take the show extremely seriously? Has it always wanted viewers to take it seriously? Or does it simply get lost in the sauce of perpetually one-upping its narrative stakes? |
I think my simple answer would be: "Por que no los dos?" A huge part of the appeal of this series to me is that the premise and most of the events are patently absurd, yet they're presented and treated as being deathly serious. A manwh*re chicken ditches his wife and kid for his side family, and she dies of a broken heart. A man's terminal medical diagnosis creates a physical manifestation of his regrets...but nope it was a mistake, sorry about your lack of purpose demon! A chicken runs around talking to people using TTS on a smartphone and everyone just rolls with it. I'll admit that the last episode was pretty stuffed with backstory, but even that was fun in an "oh lord, what will they throw at us next?" way. We've gone from a random wandering badass chicken who's fighting demons for personal reasons, to a long line of superpowered chickens who are duty-bound to hold back the demon menace. This is peak cinema right here.

Most of the time this just looks like basic anime style, with perhaps a bit rougher edge to it. Except when those devil bros are on screen. Then I'm immediately reminded of some of adult swim's cheapest, crappiest looking series of the past. I wonder why they made them look so out of place compared to the rest of the show.
