I'm wondering if To is supposed to have a double meaning in both the Japanese and English uses of the word. In English It would possibly reflect space travel going "to" somewhere. While in Japanese it could mean "and" as in "Symbiotic Planet" and "Elliptical Orbit". I'm curious if they had either use of the word in mind or both when settling on it as the title of the project.

The ships look rather nice. Everything looks a bit Stewart Cowley, which is never a bad thing.
But Vexille also had an interesting idea and nice designs, and look at how terrible that turned out to be.

Hate to say it but it looks like the intro to a bad video game.

Actually, it can also mean "To" as in "far" or "distant" in kanji, "遠". I think it describes mankind's desire to travel and explore the furthest reaches of space.

Indeed. It's especially painful because if you hear the guy being interviewed, it's obvious that he has great ideas and puts a lot of thought into how he wants them to play out, but then the actual film is just...meh. Or worse.

...Although for some reason I've felt oddly protective of Vexille ever since I watched it. Like I just want to hug it or something. I know it wasn't good and the plot was thick with holes, but I own the special edition DVD and have seen it about five times. Figure that one out.

Except it's based on an excellent 26 year old manga. No I didn't get a video game feeling from the clip, though it is hard to tell with it being so small.

My biggest concern is the decision to start of with Symbiotic Planet. It's basically right in the middle of the story, and quite a leap in the storytelling at that. I mean from that point you have no perspective of how we have gotten to that point, and one of the best things about 2001 Nights is the perspective it presents to the reader as the story progresses. But Symbiotic Planet is a very weird place to start. It's a very weird chapter to begin with.

Elliptical Orbit is two more chapters after Symbiotic Planet as far as the story goes, but it is a more logical choice as it is one of the more action oriented chapters in the book (not that this movie needs action, but I understand why it's being covered). I believe most, if not all of the clip came from that chapter.

Anyway, big concerns. The fact that we are starting in the middle, and that he is only going to tackle Two chapters is somewhat unsettling. Which is a shame, because this manga really deserves grade A treatment, and you need to understand the perspective told in the beginning to understand the perspective of the end. But by the looks of it, we are not going to come anywhere close to the ending.

I really want this to turn out well, so I am still hoping. But... things could look better.

I liked Vexille. It has it's flaws to be sure, but it was still entertaining. The biggest problem with Vexille is that it's a really big story, but it doesn't have nearly enough time to tell it.

Yes! That's it exactly! I think I remember actually saying to someone that it should have been an OAV or TV series because it just didn't have time to do everything it wanted to in the span of a movie. The characters were sympathetic and the story was interesting, but it was all over before it really had a chance to say anything about them.
