How is Orihara a bad thing?

yeah, Orihara is supposed to be a jerkwad. You must hate him! And you must not slash him with Shizuo, fangirls! Never, never, NEVER!

I look forward to what you think of the second half. It reaches a nice climactic turning point in episodes 11 and 12, with 13 and 14 starting up a new set of adventures. I still like Baccano! better, but this is a really fun series.

I agree, Orihara is a king hell jerk. That said, I kinda like him. But not as much as Celty and Shinra...they make the show for me.

Great review, I pretty much agree with everything Carl had to say. Durarara!! is one of the best shows since, well, Baccano! aired and I love it more and more with each episode. I really love the slow pace they've been taking with it, rather than rushing to cram the content of seven light novels into a 24 episode series.

However, I disagree with the idea that it's the 'grown up' version of Baccano! Baccano! may be more over the top, and the characters much more in your face, but it's just as well-crafted and well-paced as Durarara!! Juggling a cast and story as huge as that would fall apart in the hands of a lesser writer, but Narita makes it work. I have to wonder how one person can come up with so many original and engaging characters. I'm jealous, I must admit.

I've seen Izaya described as being 4chan incarnate.

Except unlike /b/, which is totally "RANDOM xD", there is some method to Izaya's madness. He's obviously working on some crazy shit behind the scenes. /b/ only wishes they could be that nefariously subversive.

I wouldn't know /b/ from /z/, I've never been on 4chan, I'm just reporting what I hear. And yes, there seems to be some sort of Chaotic Evil method to his madness, especially now spoiler[that he has Celty's head].

I'd be totally willing to violently defend Izaya's honour. If he had any.

I just don't get how he can be counted as a minus?

Yes, Izaya is an a**. But that's actually what makes him so fascinating. He's like the Joker from The Dark Knight, just without the makeup and the murdering (unless you count spoiler[the suicide pact, but that's more just callous manipulation than direct murder, not to mention that she didn't die]). I really can't see that as a bad thing.

Watched the first two episodes, and knew that I'd appreciate it so much better if I watched the entire series in a row like with Baccano, so I'm waiting for it to finish. Since it was just revealed it's going beyond its 12 episodes, it's going to make my wait that much longer, but from everything I'm hearing I'm sure it'll be worth it.

The first 12 are pretty well encapsulated; all the plots mentioned get wrapped up rather handily. It's not the whole story of course, but there weren't really any nagging loose ends after #12.

Everything that made Baccano! an unforgettable attack of cinematic anarchy is toned down in Durarara!!. Its characters are less outrageously fun, the pace more relaxed, the humor lighter and more understated. The violence is less extreme (not that it could be anything else), the sex more or less gone...

There was sex in Baccano!??? Oh man, don't tell me I fell asleep during the good parts again. I'm enjoying Durarara!! a lot right now, but it was a bit of a slog for me in the earlier going with the introduction of various characters which made it feel very episodic and held back a sense of a strong narrative engine.

I'm not a Baccano! fan at all. My reaction to the characters ranged from highly irritated (Hi, Miria! Hi, Issac!) to massively indifferent (uh, who are you again?) so for me, Durarara!! is a big step forward, creatively.

As someone who hasn't watched Baccano!, I'm really enjoying Durarara!! for what it is. I don't have that comparison to make, so I guess that's a good thing in this case. I take it that I would really like Baccano!, too, since I like Durarara!! so much...
