Man, looks like this was one of the several titles for which Akita Shoten just put one chapter in Japanese on JManga. They still haven't taken the plunge on releasing any title for sale there.

Oh, man. How have I never heard of this series before? Reading about it here pushed all the right mythology buttons for me...and then to find out it was released by Tokyopop, and not only that, but an unfinished release... ::sobs:: That's just plain not fair.

I fell in love with Akino while reading Pet Shop of Horrors and was surprised to find I loved Genju no Seiza's growing little family just as much as D and Orcot and the shop menagerie; perhaps even more so, because it had that slightly greater arc to the story, even with the many episodic bits.
When volume 8 took so long to come out, I worried. But then it finally did, and I rejoiced. And then TP gave us all the big raspberry and I wanted to break things. I live in naive hope that some publisher will take mercy on our left-hanging selves and let us read the rest of the story. And if, while they're at it, they threw in some of her other as yet unlicensed titles, too, I wouldn't complain. (I look at the lengthy bibliography on her Wikipedia entry and feel my frustrated reader-greed kick in.) |

I have the first couple volumes of the series I was able to find at a comic shop, it's really unfortunate that it was left unfinished (and a few volumes have been out of print for a while too). I really liked the first Pet Shop of Horrors series and this one was also pretty interesting. Akino's made some pretty interesting characters.

I liked Pet Shop of Horrors a whole like but I think I like Genju no Seiza even more. Sure, it is a mess, but it is a really fun mess.
I know Jmanga has mentioned if people showed interest in the titles that only have previews they would see what they could do about it. I highly suggest leaving a comment on Genju no Siza page at Jmanga. |

Matsuri Akino's Pet Shop of Horrors was my very first manga. I have pretty much everything of hers that has been licensed in English sitting on my shelves. Even the 4 volume Kamen Tantei, --no one seems to know about that one. You are correct that Akino's manga is very episodic. The wonderful thing about that is that the reader can just about grab any volume of any series and be entertained, even though they might not know everything that is going on. She obviously loves folklore, and packs all sorts of it into her stories. Since I'm a junkie for folklore, this kind of thing really suits my tastes. The demise of Tokyopop meant that every Matsuri Akino title printed in English is now completely out-of-print. makes me feel ill. |

You're not alone. I too own Kamen Tantei (and both Pet Shops) and especially enjoy the crossover bits. And of course, all the released volumes of Genju no Seiza. When TP closed doors I was left chewing the walls over so many series, but the Matsuri Akino titles I doubt will ever be released again. Which is a shame. The protagonist was sympathetic without being annoying (even though I didn't care for the girl). And the story arcs interesting. |
