The one other thing that should have been mentioned about OniAi is that it is a subtitled-only release from Funimation,which is somewhat unique from a collector's perspective. (If it is their only one, I cannot say.) I thought I remember hearing in a prior ANNCast that the Funi guys said it was an experiment of sorts. I would be interested in hearing in a future Funi-ANNCast how it worked out for them.

I wonder why they chose a show of such low quality to experiment with... If I were them, to get a good barometer for how it would work out, I would go with something really safe. Something like a fairly decent harem that isn't so good it has to be bought, so bad it has to be avoided, and since they say harems are usually some of their best-sellers, it would give a good idea of the difference. It could be anything else that meets that though. They choose odd titles to experiment with, like Ghost in the Shell's new thingy for the import bluray when there will be a domestic release with a dub... I don't get them sometimes. |

I had read another review that made me want to try OniAi because of Akito's reactions to all the advances. But I agree with this reviewer. The show could have been Rental Shelf if there had at least been some character development. Instead, all the girls stay as caricatures, with a tiny bit of backstory. The only contest for Akito's affections with a winner turns out to be a Huh? moment. And even as Akito spuns his sister, couldn't he have at least gotten closer to one of the other girls?

You make it sound like not having a dub is a risk. It's not. The risk would be in dumping money into a dub for a show that's never going to be a big seller and only appeals to hardcore anime fans who are more likely to buy a sub-only release than the casual viewers who are necessary to turn a show into a hit. |

well if it ever does get an english dub, i am definitely gonna watch it considering its fanservice is similar to girls bravo which i liked. though i am kinda surprised he give great guardians a rental instead of a perishable, sure its the weakest of the seasons ( with dragon destiny being the strongest ) but its much better than the first one. Also having ARMS at the helm isnt a bad thing. sure their an ex hentai production company that created infamous series like kite,mezzo forte,another lady innoncent and especially night shift nurses, but considering how popular queens blade is, but their good at what they do since this is an ecchi/fanservice based series. though the reviewer wont have a problem with the fighting scenes since their a lot of that on Xtreme Xecutor |

Based on the last frickin minute of OniAi, as the credits rolled on the last episode, any character development and anything truly interesting must take place after the events of the anime. Of course this 12 episode - now read the novel or manga formula is one I have come to accept, but I still don't like it.
If you are curious, the last bit I am talking about, which Bamboo hinted at, is a voiceover by the MC spoiler[that states that they are naturally not blood related and he loves her but is holding back. At least that is what I remember, booze may be a factor so correct me if I am wrong.] I still enjoyed it though, cause incest, and am still not happy about the vague ending of Oreimo. Oreimo could have knocked it out of the park, yet settled for a bunt. Of course I made up my own ending for that one in my head, and its pretty graphic. I now totally understand all this fanfic/doujin stuff. |

Bamboo so lewd. Despite the fact that I typically hate shows in the style of OniAi, I actually liked that one. Oh well, guess it's not for everyone. Although I definitely do not remember when Ikkitousen's story was fun. |

What still weirds me out about that scene, and the reason I called it kind of a half-assed attempt to wave it away, was that spoiler[he says that he knows they're not related, but she doesn't. And the reason he doesn't want to tell her is because her assumption that they are related is the only thing "holding her back." So... geh. Still weird, since as far as she knows, he's her blood brother.] |

I waffled on that for a while, but I do think the last four episodes are decent, and I think Ryofu fans would enjoy it, given the events of the first two seasons. Since the relationship between the characters in the last four eps of Great Guardians are so thematically different from the first season, I think it's kind of interesting for those who enjoyed the original. I just feel like if they just... snipped out the last few episodes and slapped that onto another season, maybe it would've been better. |

After the first couple of episodes of Oni Ai I looked on it as a gag show where each episode was a different take on a common theme. As a result I wasn't expecting any progression just a variation on theme. It wasn't very realistic, but then how many anime are. I did find it funny which I assume was the point.

Little note here for those doubting Funi's business practices concerning OniAi.
It was sold out, for quite a while on Amazon (at least in my area) and just now got some new shipments in, which again sold out. So Funi may have something going here with sub only releases. |

OniAi is probably one of the only ecchi shows I've enjoyed. The humour was genuinely really funny at times helped in part by its self awareness. You could just call the characters mindless archetypes or you could take into account that what you're watching is a mindless ecchi harem series that doesn't really try to be much more than that. From that perspective I thought the cast was colourful and did a good job of playing off the lead character. Speaking of which, I actually liked the lead guy. Instead of being a socially awkward blob or a perverted asshat he actually seemed like someone that girls might find attractive. Sure his patience is ungodly but that's kind of the joke. |

EDIT: my response is to Hellwarden, apparently it took me 10 minutes to type this. Wow.
They may have underestimated potential sales also, or had a production snafu. Would love to see the numbers or know the actual story behind this. Regardless, it appears it may have sold better than anticipated, and I support Funi doing more sub-only releases if it means we get more rather than less anime. I like dubs, but in many cases we would not get a release at all without the sub only strategy. If everything we saw released in the US were dubbed, we would simply see far fewer releases. I say this as I smirk at some of the ADV/Geneon/Bandai releases on my shelves (*ahem* media boxes, house has an awful dust problem) that received dubs years ago that would probably never even be licensed if they were released today. |
