When the movie was brought to the US it was billed as "the first X-rated animated movie". However, it wasn't submitted to the MPAA and at least one reviewer said it wouldn't have received an X-rating even if it was. Instead the distributor used the rating to cash in on the animated version of "Fritz the Cat" (the real first X-rated cartoon ever), which would premier only 3 days after "Cleopatra".

Several popular anime and manga characters of its time made cameo appearances throughout the movie. These are Kamui from "Kamui Gaiden", Sazae-san, Astro Boy, Muyonosuke, Fuji Santarou and Nezumi-Otoko from "Gegege no Kitaro", as well as characters from "Kyojin no Hoshi" and "Dame Oyaji".
About 30 minutes were cut from the movie in the US version. Besides a couple of cameo appearances and a few random scenes, they completely removed the science fiction-story framing the movie, thus making a couple of scenes completely uncomprehendable (like Ionius mysteriously knowing how to produce explosives).
