As a nod to the original 1995 TV series, this special is presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of the 16:9 aspect ratio used in modern TV and film media.

For reasons unknown, Megumi Hayashibara did not return as Rei Ayanami in this special; as a result, Rei only appears as a member of the school band near the end of the special.
