Trivia:

When Joe's opponent Rikiishi Tooru died, fans held a funeral for the character outside the publishing company

As seen in the last chapter of Ashita no Joe when Joe dies after going 15 rounds only 10 years later did the World Boxing Council (WBC) start to recognize that boxers get injured in rounds 13, 14, and 15 and thus decided to reduce world title matches to 12 rounds (which the Joe vs. Carlos match was) ever since the death of Korean lightweight boxer Duk Koo Kim (came into the WBA match against Ray Mancini at 13-0) died of injuries after being knocked out in the 14th round in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in the early 1980s.
