B-movie director Minoru Kawasaki helms 4-minute "ad" with tokusatsu effects

The official Japanese PlayStation YouTube channel began streaming the four-minute live-action "commercial" for the upcoming Earth Defense Force 3 Portable PS Vita game. B-movie director Minoru Kawasaki (Everyone but Japan Sinks, Executive Koala, Crab Goalkeeper) helmed this recreation of the alien invasion and Earth's counterattack from this third-person shooter remake.

This homage to Ultra Seven and other tokusatsu (special-effects) classics is complete with attempts at English dialogue and costumed heroes (and heroine, in the form of returning Earth Defence Force 2 character Palewing).

The official website for the game accepted applications for fans to appear as extras in the commercial. Those selected to appear also received special gifts and the opportunity to play an early copy of the game, which is scheduled for this Thursday in a regular edition for 5,800 yen (about US$74), a downloadable edition for 5,000 yen (US$63), and a 6,980 yen "Double Enlistment" pack (US$89).

Update: System corrected. Thanks, Primus.
