posted on by Kim Morrissy
Full lineup for 70th New Year's Eve music contest also revealed

NHK revealed the lineup for the 70th Kōhaku Uta Gassen ("Red and White Song Contest"), Japan's most-watched music television program, on Thursday. The yearly New Year's Eve contest pits two teams of female singers (the red team) and male singers (the white team) against each other. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Sword Art Online singer LiSA will be competing for the first time on the red team. The performers are selected based on the year's music sales, karaoke requests, and other metrics, as well as polls conducted by the NHK.

LiSA has also performed theme songs for such anime as Angel Beats!, Fate/Zero, il sole penetra le illusioni ~ Day Break Illusion, My Hero Academia, Qualidea Code, Nisekoi:, The irregular at magic high school, and Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works.

The full lineup for the 70th Kōhaku Uta Gassen includes:

In this year's contest, actress Haruka Ayase (Hotaru no Hikari, Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit) is leading the red team, and Arashi member and actor Sho Sakurai (Honey and Clover, Yatterman) is leading the white team. Comedian Teruyoshi Uchimura is the MC for the third consecutive year, and NHK newscaster Mayuko Wakuda is announcing. The theme again this year is "Let's Sing Our Dreams." The same theme is being used for the four years leading up to the 2020 Olympics.
