Japanese White Paper mentions Manga

posted on
On November 14th the Japanese Ministry of Education officially published its year 2000 educational white paper in which they referred to Manga as an important form of modern expression. It is the first time since the educational white paper made its appearance in 1988 that it has mentioned Manga.

The document concludes that "manga is being recognized as an important form of modern expression," saying that Manga accounts for roughly 40 percent of all Japanese publications and 20 percent of the retail value of all publications. Also mentionned are the pressence of Manga exhibitions in many art museums, a large number or scholarly studies into various aspects of Manga, and its increasing international popularity.

The white paper is to be available in the Ministry's web page in December.
