Feature directorial debut for Steamboy's technical director Shinji Takagi

The official website of the Shin SOS Dai Tokyo Tankentai (The New SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers) feature film revamped itself and announced the movie's finalized release date. The loose anime sequel to Katsuhiro Otomo's SOS Dai Tokyo Tankentai manga will open on May 19 in five regions of Japan. The movie uses 2D and cel-shaded 3D computer graphics to tell the adventures of a group of boys in the underground labyrinth of Tokyo.

Otomo (Akira, Steamboy) created the original manga and the movie's original character designs, but Steamboy and Blood: The Last Vampire's technical animation director Shinji Takagi takes over the proverbial director's chair for this outing. The Sunrise animation studios handled the production for Bandai Visual. The movie premiered as an official selection of last year's 19th Tokyo International Film Festival's "Animec TIFF 2006" event.
