Yumiko Shirai's Tenken-sai manga to be released in English this week

One Peace Books, a New York City-based publisher that specializes in Japanese literature, will release an English-language edition of Yumiko Shirai's manga Tenken this week. The one-volume story revolves around a young woman named Saki who is chosen to be sacrificed to a monster at the upcoming Tenken festival (Tenken-sai).

The manga, under the original title Tenken-sai, had already won an Encouragement Award from the Japan Media Arts Festival in December of 2007. It was later published in collected form in Japan by Sanctuary Publishing on July 26, 2008.

According to a press release (PDF) from One Peace Books, it took Shirai ten years to create the manga after coming up with the concept. A sample of the manga is available at the publisher's official website.

President and CEO Ayumu Takahashi launched One Peace Books in 2006 as a joint venture of Sanctuary Publishing and A-WORKS Inc., both established by Takahashi in Japan. One Peace Books has released 10 English-language books to date, which are distributed in the United States by Blue Sky Media Group and in Europe by Roundhouse Group.
