Experimental Anime Screenings in Newcastle

Part of a Japanese film festival at the Star and Shadow Cinema.

Newcastle's Star and Shadow cinema (directions) will host a festival of Japanese film in January, including experimental anime. Details are available here.

The two scheduled animation items are as follows:

Tuesday January 17, 7.30 p.m: Enter the Cosmos: Takashi Makino - a trio of short films by the experimental Japanese film-maker/animator Takashi Makino, made between 2004 and 2011. This event will also include an introduction by Julian Ross, a specialist in independent Japanese cinema from the University of Leeds. More details here. 80 minutes running time.

Friday January 27: 7.30 p.m. Beyond Anime: The Outer Limits - a 90-minute programme of seventeen short animations made between 2002 and 2011. A full list of the films is here.

Other screenings during the festival include a rare live-action Japanese horror film from 1938, The Ghost Cat and the Mysterious Shamisen (details), on Saturday January 14 at 7.30 p.m.
