Japanese Monthly Blu-ray Retail Sales Topped DVDs for 1st Time

posted on by Rae First

The Japan Video Software Association (JVA) reported on Tuesday that monthly Blu-ray Disc retail sales topped DVD retail sales for the first time this past June. Overall sales for both formats totaled 19.762 billion yen (US$204 million) that month, or 88.9% of the total from the same period last year. Blu-ray retail sales were 7.579 billion yen (US$78.4 million), or 151.5% of last June's sales. DVD retail sales were 7.194 billion yen (US$74.4 million), or 63.7% of last June's sales.

The retail sales totals do not include discs intended for rental stores or disc for commercial business use. If those were included, DVDs still outgrossed Blu-ray Discs in Japan in June, 11.846 billion yen (US$122.7 million) to 7.916 billion yen (US$82.00 million).
