Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris Game's TGS Trailer Reveals More Characters, Where Story Branches From Anime

Bandai Namco Entertainment debuted a new trailer for its Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris game at Tokyo Game Show on Saturday. The trailer confirms that the characters Cardinal, Selka, Ronye, and Tiese will appear in the game.

The game staff also clarifies how the game's story relates to the anime's story. The game follows the same basic storyline as the Sword Art Online: Alicization anime. However, it does not follow the same route as the Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld run that will premiere in October. Instead, it will branch off at that point into its own game route. The staff consulted with original creator Reki Kawahara, who wanted a game that depicts the original storyline, at least in the first half.
Bandai Namco Entertainment also revealed that the game will feature a new environment, Glacis Fields. While this is not a open-world game, it does include a vast field with three levels to explore.
The staff wanted to release the game on Switch, but had to deal with fitting the vast game map and character polygon models in the limited memory. When asked if the game will include dating simulation elements as some of the franchise's previous game have, the staff replied, "No comment."
Miho Okasaki (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) plays the new character Medina Orthinanos in the game.

Sword Art Online: Alicization premiered in Japan in October 2018 and is streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and FunimationNow. The series is adapting the entire "Alicization Arc" of Reki Kawahara's original novels and will air for four cours, or four quarters of a year. The first two cours aired from October to March, and the second two cours, titled Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld, will premiere on October 12.
