Asian Rock Band The Slants Receive Multiple Nominations for Portland Music Awards

Portland, Oregon-based Asian outfit The Slants - Simon Young (bass), Aron (vocals), Gaijin (keyboards), Tyler Chen (drums), and Jonathan (guitar) - have just received multiple nominations in the second annual Portland Music Awards in the following categories: Album of the Year (for their album, "Slanted Eyes, Slanted Hearts"), Band of the Year, and Best New Artist. The only other artist to receive 3 nominations is Portland jazz legend, Mel Brown.

"It's very exciting and such a great honor," says founder and bassist Simon Young. "I believe we're the first and only Asian-Americans to receive nominations in any category outside of 'World Music.'"

The band has been touring anime conventions and clubs across the country, recently appearing in 30 out of the 50 states in the U.S over summer and headlining numerous Asian cultural festivals. The Portland Music Awards will mark the one year anniversary for their release, "Slanted Eyes, Slanted Hearts."
This year's event will be all-ages, with floor seats reserved for 21 and over, and the balcony for those under 21. Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster and the Crystal Ballrom box office for $25.00 per ticket. Doors at 6pm, and the event will start promptly at 7pm, kicking off with a performance from March Fourth Marching Band.

The second annual Portland Music Awards will be hosted by PDX TV's Chloe Houser, and feature performances by Mel Brown with Ben Darwish, Tea for Julie, Aaron Meyer, Portland Cello Project, Idle Poet, Debra Arlyn, Bobby Torres, Echo Helstrom, Acoustic Minds, Keegan Smith, and many more, including a surprise feature act.

The Grammy-style awards show will feature five nominees in twenty-two categories, including Best Band, Male and Female Artist, Radio Station, Music Venue, and specific genre awards for country, jazz, blues, rock, and more.

Voting takes place at and will be accepted through January 20th. At the voting page, voters will get to select only one box for each category. Votes can vote up to five times per IP Address. They are asked to vote in as many categories as possible.

Winners will be be announced January 29th at the awards show.

This year's event will be broadcast live on the radio and airing on television in February though Comcast On-Demand, including outtakes, special features.
