What's It About?

Since their school days, Ki Tae-hwa and Lee Yea-ju have been known as inseparable friends. But after Tae-hwa loses his girlfriend because of Yea-ju, he creates distance between them, using his enlistment as an excuse.

After his discharge, they meet again at a drinking party. Yea-ju confesses that he has remained single, quietly enduring the loneliness left by Tae-hwa's absence. Unable to turn away, Tae-hwa lets himself drift into a moment he never intended, telling himself it is only temporary. As he moves forward, hoping to return to the friendship they once had, he begins to question whether that is truly what he wants.

Is It Worth Reading?

Someone should conduct a survey of how many Lezhin titles start with a sex scene. If they were academically inclined, they could then see if comparable sites like Manta or the spicier sides of WEBTOON and Tapas had the same number of coitus primus titles, because seriously, it feels like Lezhin has a lot. As you may have guessed, Best Friends For-Never is definitely one of them, and I think most, if not all, of the series' five chapters also begin in flagrante delicto. Of course, at only five chapters long, the sex is largely the point of this story, but still.

Falling under the friends-to-lovers romance trope, Best Friends For-Never is a closely-written story about Tae-hwa and Yea-ju, who have been besties since high school. In fact, according to Tae-hwa's ex-girlfriends, they're too close, and every single one of them dumped him because he spent more time with Yea-ju or talking about Yea-ju than he did with them. Somehow Tae-hwa never made the connection that he had stronger feelings for his pal, but you'd better believe that Yea-ju did, and he's been waiting for literal years for Tae-hwa to get a clue. When they're reunited after Tae-hwa slunk off to do his military service after yet another breakup (without telling anyone, naturally), Yea-ju thinks this is his moment…and he's absolutely going to take advantage of Tae-hwa's alcohol-impaired state and casual offer of a kiss to make that happen.

As you might have guessed, this isn't the warmest and fuzziest romance out there. It doesn't have the space to be, which is a shame, because I'd have liked to see this story take more time to be told. I do think Tae-hwa's always been in love with Yea-ju, and given the space to fully explore that, this would be very sweet. As it stands, however, it's got some serious dubcon issues and Yea-ju's meltdown, while absolutely earned, still feels like it comes out of nowhere, or at least comes on too soon. They're meant to be together, sure, but a couple more chapters would have made a big difference in selling readers on that.

Still, if you're just reading this for the explicit sex, you should be happy. Penises are light saber-censored, but nothing else is, and the art is quite nice in general. Sound effects have a few issues – “thwack” isn't a great one to use for sex in my opinion, and if I never see “slorp” again, it'll be too soon – but the translation is otherwise solid. This is a fine, quick, and dirty read, good for when you want a new smutty series but don't want to commit to 50+ chapters.

Have you ever had those two friends who are clearly meant to be together, but one of them is too dumb or stubborn to realize it? I think reading this incredibly short story perfectly captured that exact type of frustrating entertainment. Look, in this era, it's not uncommon to sleep with strangers, nor is it uncommon for you to sleep with friends and not be in a relationship with them, but the protagonist of the story might just be one of the most thickheaded people in this entire guide. Despite the story being so short and going at a relatively steady pace for most of its run, his stubbornness contributes to one of the only bits of drama that hit at the very end of the story. But the only reason why I am frustrated is that everything before that was actually handled exceptionally well.

The story is about two longtime friends, but one has had a crush on the other, spending years pining over them and wondering when they were going to ask them out. When one quickly becomes single, an intense physical relationship starts to blossom, and honestly, it is very titillating. The two leads have great chemistry, and it's nice seeing them slowly but very naturally fall into this new relationship dynamic. I do feel bad for the one who was left constantly waiting for this golden opportunity to come around because. I do also appreciate how short the story is because, unless there was some other kind of misunderstanding that got introduced, which the story does tease, but never fully follows through on, then dragging out this type of story probably would've been more than helpful. It comes in, gives you a good, intense romance, and then leaves before it has a chance to overstay its welcome. I respect the story that doesn't try to waste my time, and I don't think this one will waste yours.
