Kawaii means cute, or the way it's usually used. Out of context it can also mean scared.

No, Japanese for "scary" is "kowai", which is pronounced koh-wah-ee. When said quickly it sounds somewhat similar to "kawaii", so the confusion is understandable.

Welcome to the Japanese language... please enjoy your stay.

The word kawaii means "cute", and typically means the same thing as would be spoken in English. Other good translations include "pretty", "beautiful" (typically in a youthful, innocent sense), or "darling" ("what a darling coat!" - a slightly antiquated form of the word, used as an adjective).

PS: Don't confuse kawaii with kawaisou. kawaisou means "pitiable", or "sad" (as in "a sad state of affairs") ;) [and don't confuse it with kowai either, as pointed out by Kain]

Since we are on the topic here, two other words that are important not to get confused are:

kirei - which mean pretty or beautiful, kinda like kawaii
kirai - which means hate or dislike
