While watching SIGN again (after watching 20 episodes of Evangelion), I'm noticing a lot of similarities.
Let's see the evidence:
- Tsukasa and Shinji are two pieces of the same cloth.
Tsukasa is an introverted MMORPG player
Shinji is an introverted Evangelion Pilot.
Tsukasa starts out alone, but initially gets known because of his "special powers". Later, he makes real friends who see him for the person he is.
Shinji starts out alone, but initally gets known because of his Evangelion Pilot status. Later, he makes real friends who see him for the person he is.
Tsukasa is being manipulated by a mysterious force, his mother died, and has a bad relationship with his father.
Shinji is being manipulated by his father and a mysterious agency (SEELE), his mother died, and has a bad relationship with his father.
Both of them are "The Chosen One" and the "Tragic Hero", who eventually believe in their destiny and overcome all their fears -- and both are rewarded in the end for their faith.
- Mimiru is a lot like Asuka.
Mimiru is the fiery, extroverted, and headstrong female associate of Tsukasa. She also has a relationship with Bear (see below).
(Probably a dream come true for Amanda Winn Lee, the English VA, because she initially went for the role of Asuka when ADV was casting Evangelion, but was turned down because she had been playing the same extroverted, fiery character. So, she became silent Rei Ayanami instead.)
(Also, she isn't the only Evangelion VA in .hack -- Allison Keith comes in playing as Rena in .hack//Legend of the Twilight. Coincidence?)
- Bear is very similar to Kaji's "public face".
Bear is a 40-something writer who has good looks and a lot of knowledge. He also knows BT, a former model, so he could have been a ladies man like Kaji. Bear also seems to act to Mimiru like Kaji does to Asuka -- treating them as kids, even though they both immediately would say they aren't.
- BT is very similar to Ritsuko.
Manipulating the board for her own uses -- remind you of another blond-haired lady? BT also gets to know Crim, but he spurns her in the end. (Crim's analogue is below, and it might surprise you!)
BT also knows Bear (who is the analogue of Kaji, see above).
- Subaru is similar to Misato.
In command of a group of people keeping order in The World, listening to the truth before her but disbelieving it right up to the end, and becoming a close ally of both Tsukasa and Mimiru -- which really helps out in the last episode of SIGN.
- Crim is similar to Gendo Ikari
Don't believe me? Well, he's a busy businessman whose only dedicated to The World when he is in it. He is a founder of the Crimson Knights, along with Subaru (Gendo and Misato are the head of NERV operations, with Misato looking up to Gendo as Subaru used to look up to Crim). He, also, has a hidden agenda in The World along with BT. (Gendo and Ritsuko, anyone?)
- Sora is similar to Kaji's "secret side"
Gathering information, getting to know the ladies, never knowing what side he's really on... this is Kaji once the facade falls off and he is revealed as a SEELE spy (and Sora was a spy for Morgana... or so she thought). Also, when Sora betrays Morgana, she retaliates by sucking Sora into The World and putting his real body (a child) into a coma. (Kaji getting killed by SEELE for betraying them, anyone?)
So, with all of this evidence, is there any doubt of the similarities?
(Also, anyone or anything I might have missed?)

um... maybe.
btw, just thought of one more connection:
- Helba's Organization is similar to the SEELE Organization.
Think about this one: Sora is Helba's operative, Helba's organizaton is based on a philosophical text, they operate both in The World and outside of it (Liminality), and they seem to be moving the agenda of waking Aura (the "savior" figure).

Yeah, I noticed the similarities between Shinji and Tsukasa as well, which is the reason I didn't give the series (.hack//SIGN) a Masterpiece rating.
I can't stand those kinds of characters that act so snobby and introverted because of their "abusive upbringing" or whatever. The overall attitude they shed until that much deserved wake up call makes a somewhat bad impression on me and it just urks me to have to put up with it from the beginning to almost the middle of a series.
I'm not too sure about your other comparisons.
Both Mimiru and Asuka are annoying to listen to in English, but character wise, I don't see anything. Mimiru is a lot more reserved than what you initially see in Asuka. Not to mention Asuka has that whole personal agenda of hers, where as Mimiru is just kind of in there for the sake of Tsukasa.
Bear doesn't remind me of Kaji at all. Bear acts his age, a writer, teacher, private eye, or whatever father in his mid 40s (I think) who because of his divorce (?) looks at Tsukasa as a surrogate child to make up for the parenting he couldn't give to his daughter in the real world.
Kaji on the other hand is more of a young, go-getter, playboy kind of character with his little secret mission behind the scenes (and no wife or kids ). He's much more playful and energetic than Bear, though the only thing these two might have in common is that they're both pretty knowledgable when on a need to know basis.
I suppose BT and Ritsuko are both manipulative, but Ritsuko is doing so for her own reasons (to get back at Gendou?), while BT is just doing it for attention, as is seen through her constant attempts to meet Crim outside of The World.
Subaru may be similar to Misato in terms of leadership, but that's about it. I don't even want to touch Misato's real reason for wanting attention. Subaru on the other hand is only pursuing Tsukasa because of the empathy she feels for what he's experiencing and not just because she wants any guy to make up for her father .
I'm not sure how Crim and Gendou are really similar. Although Crim is obsessed with all things in The World, he still plays it like a game. And what's his and BT's agenda again? In any case, it's apparent that he likes Subaru, which if we went by your other comparisons would mean... Gendou likes Mistao?
On the other side of the universe, Gendou is obsessed with his dead wife and treats the real world like a game. He uses everyone and everything to a whim not caring about anything more than ressurecting Yui. He has compassion for no one other than her and is pretty cold, unlike the more compassionate and lawful Crim.
And finally, the difference between Sora and Kaji's "secret side" is that Sora isn't answering to anyone. He exists in The World only to make himself look cool and to make others intimidated with his playings skills. He's only a 5th grader (?) and his whole affiliation with Morgana was of his own doing since he willingly betrayed her anyway.
Overall, I guess I can see some similarites in terms of what roles certain characters play, but in terms of actual character and personality, I disagree.
But then again, I also haven't seen all of Evangelion since summer of 2003, so I may have forgotten some things, though, feel free to make more comments in case you or I am missing something .

The point is I disagree with Glory Questor's comparisons between the characters of .hack//SIGN and Evangelion.

Um... Considering the character designer/manga writer (Yoshiyuki Sadamoto) for Evangelion was one of the 3 masterminds behind the .Hack Projects this isnt really surprising.

You would think, though, that with three separate authors on the project, there wouldn't be so many Evangelion nuances, some ad verbatim (i.e. Tsukasa).

Well, Tsukasa does have a reason for being the "highly feminine" type.

I thought Mimiru really was more of an extroverted wild child before meeting Tsukasa and being friends with him. On the same vein, Asuka was a lot more wild until she started living with Shinji and Misato, and making friends.
Also, both have that softer side that they only show to their closest friends.
(Another thing: Mimiru really doesn't mention having a mother, but talks a lot about her father. What is it with Sadamoto and mothers being dead or disappeared?)

This is a good point.
Kaji also treats Shinji and Asuka in the same manner, though, in Episode 18 ("Ambivalence"), when Misato has him "babysit" the two. It's really the only time that we see Kaji in a "parental" role... and he's actually not too bad at it.
What's harder about Kaji comparisons is the lack of knowledge about his past. So I concede the point to you, and that Bear and Kaji really are only superficially alike.

I really think that she has the same curiosity to the Key of the Twilight as the others, but her ends are usually against the others. By the end, she does join up with them again, but for a time she pursued her own path to the Key for her own reasons. (The relationship with Crim was just for attention, but the reasons behind wanting to find the Key... are never really known.)
More later, after I get something to eat.
