Hi, I'm a new anime fan and I just found out how unreliable semicolons are.
Just after watching Steins;Gate I googled it, went to its wikipedia page and found a link to Chaos;Head. In my previously innocent anime mind I thought that it would be at least nearly as great as Steins;Gate were. I was wrong
Foolishly guided by the mysterious semicolon power I watched 12 episodes of crazy talk anime. I swear, I never seen an anime like this, and... well, I dont have anything to weight my statement, but, it was really on another, lower, level when I try to compare it to Steins;Gate. There are similarities: A hikikomori, a ton of cute girls, @channel, modern setting, technobabble. And then there are differences: Steins;Gate is far better. I need to tell you that I heard both Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate were, before being an anime, some sort of obscure visual novel game. Which I imagine, by the ammount of girls surrounding the main character, is another term for dating sim. And I didn't play the games, I just watched the anime. For the first time in my short anime life, I saw a character be created, displayed over and over, and then killed without doing absolutely anything useful, over the course of 10 episodes!!! Yes, that is in Chaos;Head. Not that anyone in Chaos;Head does anything useful at all. Its just that some characters are more fillers than, well, characters. Then I try to compare the powers between both animes... Spoilers! spoiler[Steins;Gate is mostly about time travel. The main character grasps this most of the time. It works well and is very interesting to watch how he is going back AND BACK in time to solve problems he created himself. In Chaos;Head some few "Black Knights"(this is not code geass, too bad) can force their delusions in other people minds. None of the characters can actually do this. SERIOUSLY. They all SUCK at this. And I would suck at it too, because forcing delusions WILL NOT make someone fall into flower bed and survive a fall. At least not in my world.] Maybe my standards have become too high to this kind of stuff. I have watched the following, in this order: Death Note, Code Geass, Code Geass R2, Steins;Gate, Chaos;Head. So, by the time I went to Chaos;Head I was expecting some crazy talk with some sense in it... Wish I could send a D-Mail now... On the plus side, Chaos;Head was made before Steins;Gate! Or at least it looks like so on the wikipedia template "Science Adventure series by 5pb. and Nitroplus". Which means, the next one in the list, Robotics;Notes will be as awesome compared to Steins;Gate as Steins;Gate is compared to Chaos;Head, right? |

Steins Gate was indeed better, one of the main contributing factors why, is because it was a little longer and had more time for character development. Still Chaos Head wasn't all that bad either, in my opinion.

Chaos;Head is pretty much the main reason why I likely won't watch Steins;Gate. I don't think I've ever seen such a promising show make a nosedive towards mediocrity so quickly. Had they just continued the murder mystery aspect it could have been a solid sci-fi/mystery/thriller.
(It also didn't help that Myself;Yourself was rather bland as well) |

Chaos Head and Steins Gate are really two different shows though. If for whatever reason you didn't like one of them the other is a different type of science fiction, with different characters, presented differently. |

Ugh... I'm blind buying Chaos;Head because I enjoyed Steins;Gate, after reading this I'm having second thoughts. *shrug* Might cancel it and put that money towards something else... |

I suggest reading both Chaoshead and Steins Gate as VN's, watch the Stein's Gate anime and pretend the Chaoshead anime adaption doesn't exist.

Oh please, stop all generalizations of visual novel like this already. While Chaos;Head is...yes, one of that 'obscure' visual novel, Steins;Gate is totally clean and safe for works. By judging all Visual Novels = obscure game will make you missed some awesome stories which only available in that medium, which are again, safe for works...Well, even some of games which are obscure have magnificent stories which makes you gladly toss away the porn away, for the plot =w= About the topic itself, the original C;H actually was pretty good. It's just the anime that ruins the source pretty hard. Well, it's only a matter of horrible adaptation. Btw, Myself;Yourself (or isn't it is Myself,Yourself? CMIIW) has no relationship at all with S;G or C;H |

zeroyuki92 should look up "obscure" in a dictionary.

Steins;Gate was an excellent adaptation. If you didn't watch it because of Chaos;Head then you're definitely missing one of the best anime this year (I'd definitely rank it top 5, second after Fate Zero because in terms of sheer entertainment Fate Zero is just that epic).

Yeah, from the sound of it, I believe he's confusing "obscure" with "obscene". |

Haha, I feel sorry for you. I remember watching Chaos;Head and thinking it was ok when it was just seeming like a mildly paranormal murder mystery. Once rock stars started summoning guitar swords, I dropped it. I was actually going to skip S;G based off of how terrible C;H was but I'm glad I didn't. I'm not too excited about the new series though. That company's work is either garbage or amazing and I've got a bad feeling that they won't be amazing twice in a row. |

I've gotta agree. I couldn't keep watching Chaos;Head after the pink escavator made an appearance; up until then it was only just maintaining my interest anyway. The worst part of that show was almost absolutely nothing happening for the majority of the time I watched it. Also, I didn't find any of the characters to be overly likeable.
Steins;Gate, on the other hand, had an interesting story that kept a reasonable pace (a great pace on my second watching when I was able to marathon it) and fantastic characters. Loved Okarin, loved Kurisu, loved Daru. The only character I hated was Moeka, for which I was given plenty of reasons other than 'she's boring'. So I'll re-iterate what's already been said for those thinking of skipping Steins;Gate because of Chaos;Head: Don't. You'll be missing out. They share some common elements but, in my mind, Steins;Gate is superior in every way. |

I'm going to swim against the flow here and point out that Chaos;Head is actually quite good in some ways. It does have problems that will rightly keep it from being regarded as great, but I have watched to first BD and have reasonably entertained.
What I like mostly about Chaos is that its lead character knows himself to be delusional. Usually delusional characters aren't like that. And the story works with that, keeping you guessing what is real and not, then spoiler[ultimately developing the idea that there is no difference]. It manages at times to be appropriately creepy, but falls short most of the time. Anyone who is trying to draw some equivalence or has some sort of expectation of parity between two series because they both have a semicolon in the name really needs to get a grip. |

Yes, the first half or thereabouts is somewhat reasonably entertaining. Watch the rest. Remember, FUN^10 * INT^40 = Ir2 This equation is of immense importance and isn't at all thrown out of nowhere with absolute inanity. |
