I know this is OT, but I thought that some Anime fans might like this show. If you didn't watch it when it was on 3 years ago and you didn't buy the dvd, this is your chance to see it. This is the show that was supposed to be a rip-off of Outlaw Star, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop.
It will be on the Sci-Fi channel this Friday at 7:00 EST. There's some info about it here: http://scifi.com/firefly/ |

So how is this show a rip-off of Cowboy Bebop and Trigun?

Because it's vaguely western-themed sci-fi, and there was absolutely nothing comparable to that in the entire history of science fiction prior to Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. E.E. Smith must've gone back in time to write his total anime rip-off "space opera" pulp stories. EDIT: Ah, here's the thread from three years ago where the subject was debated to death. |

i wonder if it's possible Sci Fi will pay for a new season since people were so pissed about it's cancellation.

new season? there were only 13 episodes. I think 12 and 13 never aired on fox but Sci-Fi is going to show it. I know it was pretty much an outlaw star rip, what with the girl with no memory being found in a box just like Melfina was, but I still liked it.

I know there's supposed to be a movie coming out, but AFAIK, FOX still owns the rights. As of now, I haven't heard that they plan to make any more shows, but the feature film contract supposedly has options for more. Hopefully if the movie is big enough we'll see another season, or at least a sequel!

I've heard rumours of direct-to-video sequels to the TV series should the movie be popular. Certainly, Fox is dipping its toes in the TV franchise DTV feature waters with the upcoming Family Guy movie, so I think it's feasible.
It was a stasis pod, which is a fairly standard sci-fi cliché, and the shots aren't even that similar, certainly not similar enough for one to be sure that it's more than just mere coincidence. And River and Melfina have very little in common. Last edited by Tenchi on Wed Jul 20, 2005 11:29 am; edited 1 time in total |

Considering that Serenity (aka Firefly: The Movie) was delayed a bit for release....your guesses here as to why the delay. I would say that we are looking at another one of those false hopes for a second series attempts.
Yeah, I'll go see Serenity, but I doubt that many outside the fanbase or sci-fi community will buy tickets. |

I read the other thread about how Hajime Yatate should sue and the funny thing is Hajime Yatate apparently is not a real person. person#19 |

There is going to be a three part comic book that will come out to lead up to the movie.
I don't know if there will be a new series. I'm not expecting the movie to do well, but it would be nice if it did. And if it did, it probably won't do well enough for Fox to start paying for more episodes. |

I find it funny how people refer to Trigun, Bebop and Outlaw Star as the founders of Space Cowboys in anime and cartoons. What about shows like Bismark, Galaxy Rangers, and all that Matsumoto stuff. I've always thought of Bebop and Outlaw Star as part of a long line of cowboy SF.

All the new(er) fans can't see past Trigun! Harlock? What?? Matsu-who? There was anime with western themes before Trigun????? |

Back in 2001, when Whedon sat down to write his follow-up to the two hit Fox series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," he wanted to try his hand at a space Western. "I thought, 'Wagon Train' in space," he says on the phone from Cape Cod, where he is conceiving his upcoming "Wonder Woman" script.
He didn't know that Gene Roddenberry had set out to do the same thing back in the 1960s, when he created "Star Trek," a smart TV show that was saved by its fans. Haven't seen the series myself so I'll watch it on Sci-fi when it airs. Or maybe I'll just buy it on DVD if I like it.
