Hard to say. Normally, I'd just say yes, but if you only have a little money it may or may not be worth it.
I say this as I believe Berserk really gets interesting until the end of Vol. 3, with the beginning of the Golden Age arc. Until then it just seems like a wandering-hero-slaying-local-monsters story, nothing to right home about.
Well, I'll recommend it, with the hope that you'll stick with it. It is pretty detailed artwork, which is nice.

I'm just gonna point out here that it's only one small step from hentai.

I don't normally read manga, but I do read Berserk every time a new volume is out. A true worthwhile read and well worth your cash. Excellent art, and an excellent story!

Berserk is kind of expensive, but I think it's worth it if you like midevial fantasy with explicit content. Another good choice would be Blade of the Immortal.
I believe dreamlandcomics.com got these book with 30% off which would save you 30 dollar if you decide to spend that 100 dollar.

That store is great, except it sometimes takes forever to get my orders.
Oh and Berserk is great, you can even start it from volume 4, I don't think there's anything in the first 3 volumes that are crucial to know.

Although its a few bucks more than most manga (it runs at 15 USD), it is awesome. Pretty violent, but the main character is fairly deep.
Since you have a large amount of money to use, I'd say get the first volume or 2 and see if you like it

There was a lot of sex in volume 9.

True, there was a lot of sex in Vol 9, but done in such a tasteful way-- it really developed all the characters in a way that sex scenes almost never do-- in Hollywood, or TV, or anime, or anywhere.
Anyways, Berserk is, IMO, the best currently running manga series in the US, bar none. (Of course, this is because manga like Emma and YKK aren't being released in the US, or that manga like Nausicaa is long since finished). Berserk is deep, interesting, philosophical at times, and beautifully drawn. It's also slow moving, gory, and full of battles that go on a bit too long for me at times. Still, as a whole, for dark fantasy with interesting realistic charcters, it's very very good. And yeah, it really picks up by vol 3. But I'd still get the first two-- there's stuff there that eventually (many vols later, 10 or 15 or so) ties in. If you're going to dive in, start from the beginning I say....

I would give that a definite "yes".
While I don't particularly enjoy the graphic sex/violence, it's still quite an amazing series.
Don't base judgments on the first volume, though. Once you get into the plot it gets really, really good. Go for it, dude.

the thing is, though, that its not about the sex and violence; it's about the development of Guts (and others) as a character

Oh, definitely. I always try to get people to understand that when suggesting it.
