I have noticed that in One Piece, with all the blood and violence that it has, death is not depicted as violently as in other manga or anime. In fact, rarely do you even see death in the One Piece world. Though people get beaten up, sliced up, smashed, or bombed, even "normal" people survive harsh beatings. Because you see them at the end and they'll be standing or something. 98% of the deaths in this series are seen in flashbacks, I have seen only three deaths in the "present." Those were one of the bandits was shot in the head by Lucky Loo in volume 1, and two people that were "judged" by Enel in the Skypia Arc. Aside from Enel, it seems the only way to kill somebody in One Piece is to shoot them in the head. But I will also assume that people do drown in this world, too. I should also say that a majority of the deaths you know happen, but you don't see it. Oh, I forgot a death that didn't happen by the above mentioned causes, Kuina died when she hit head falling down the stairs. And if anybody read volume 41, the researchers died in the fire that was set to the tree, and all that were on the evacuation boat perished when Sakazuki blew it to the water. They even bombed the marines that were on it. Tells you how ruthless the government can be at times.

Yeah, I've noticed that almost all of the deaths in One Piece happen in the flashbacks. But boy, what deaths. I'm always surprised by how emotional the series can be. Wasn't there a commander during the Alabasta arc that had the power of a hawk that died? No wait, if I recall correctly Oda hinted that he was alive at the end after all... But yeah, most of the present deaths are just bystanders caught in explosions and such.

That sums it up pretty well, and I think that could be a reason Oda doesn't use death very often in his series. The fact that so few people die in One Piece, but the ones that did die died a memorable death says something about the series. I love the depiction of death in this series. It's just right for the impact it's supposed to have, and not ridiculously overdone for shock value, which Oda could easily do.
And yeah, Pell survived. If I had to pick one part of One Piece I liked the least, it would be that.

I think no one who's name is mentioned in OP ever dies. Only those guys in the background get killed, and even then I can't be sure. It sometimes seems that death in OP is non-existant, all the villians they defeat turn out to be alive afterall... I like it tho, and don't mind it at all.
