First off we need more movie to be shown on big screen with enough screening to reach the academy requirement for best animated film. Still that pretty exciting new if your name is Miyazaki otherwise if you read the rest of the report it's 119 other invite to people who like brokeback moutain. Till next time, Delta Kiral Edit: Actually I got to give some DAP to the Academy for last year at least they pick the best movie (Crash) of last year for the best movie of the year, and they did get the best animated feature correct. |

No matter what, the Academy need fresh blood in it. They've gotten a bit stogey but at least they aren't as bad as the Grammy's or the Golden Globes for nominating and rewarding weird choices (Anyone remember Milli Vanilli?) I understand they've also invited Dakota Fanning, who is all of 12 years-old. How is she going to be able to vote on some of the movies when she isn't old enough to watch them?

Hmm, wonder if he'll even join; he didn't turn up whenSpirited Away won an Oscar.
(and he says that he doesn't watch many animated movies, so he probably won't have much effect in that area) |

Of course Miyazaki should have been included for a while now.
This new way of selecting however is quite scary. I am afraid it only makes the Academy lose even more credibility. The fact that you have to be voted in through committee instead of simply fulfilling requirements, seems kind of Stalinist to me. Especially when dealing with what many consider an artform. More of a popularity contest really. Along with a few others I saw(along with a few who I have no idea who they are, but most likely are important, along with some who shouldn't be there), Miyazaki definitely deserves to be on that list though. Edit: SP errors. Last edited by Dargonxtc on Fri Jul 07, 2006 1:19 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Last year's awards were really messed up, IMO. Maybe these people (along with Miyazaki) will pick better movies than Memoirs of the Geisha to win awards, I don't know. However, I agree with Delta Kiral; at least Crash got it's deserving prize.

Crash won, because AMPAS doesn't care about gay people.

And BBM wasn't that good of a movie either.

True, BBM was mediocre, but it had more critical acclaim and financial success than Crash. It was politics-i.e. homophobia-which kept BBM from winning for best film.

Was it homophobia, or the fact it was mediocre. I agree it was a huge financial success, but I thought the academy didn't look at such things. Either way as I said before in this thread, this new committee style voting thing leaves a bad taste of non-credibilty in my mouth anyway. |

BBM won for the best director which one of the highest awards at the Oscars. There was a very good chance BBM could of won for best picture, at least the academy got it right on the best picture. Crash was the best title by far, Munich wasn't Steven's best picture, BBM wasn't amazing, Capote was pretty good in my opinion but when best actor wins award the movie never seems to win. Good night and Good luck was something that I really enjoyed and thought it could have some sucess, but I still thought Crash was much better then all of the movies.

Dargon:
There were people in AMPAS who were saying they didn't want to see a movie which involved gay sex.
