I just got my January 2007 issue of Shonen Jump in the mail, and lo and behold, the January 2007 releases page showed I"s Vol. 11 with a "Mature Content" sign on it! This is the sign similar to the ones seen on series such as Golgo 13 & Cain Saga.
My question is, is there really anything that explicit in Vol. 11 that would get Viz to add such a symbol on? With I"s being the only series I buy upon release (as it's one of my favourite series), I'm intrigued as to why this would happen.
If you provide any spoilers, please tag them. Thanks in advance!

Er, I don't remember anything ever happening in I"s that remotely deserves a mature content warning. Certainly nothing beyond what happens in Love Hina.

That's wierd since they've been editing almost every volume for nudity.

Maybe they have something they can't edit for content.

Maybe, but even so, it would make all of the previous editing pointless.

I thought I had an idea why it got the rating, but then I looked it up and it turns out what I was thinking takes place in volume 12: Iori and Seto taking a shower together and almost having sex. But I glanced through volume 11 and I didn't notice anything all that bad. So I have no clue.

If no one here can figure out a specific reason for the warning, the reason may simply be that someone at Viz now thinks that, despite the editing, the title is too racy.
It could be possible that they've decided to stop editing it, but that seems less likely.
Potentially, this could indicate that despite the editing, the bookstores are still trying to manipulate the company into making concessions on their terms. "We can't have this in our store unless you put a warning on it!"
There's also the chance that Viz may actually have received a complaint. (Again, I doubt it, but you never know.)
It looks like they would have been better off just putting the warning on it to begin with and not wasting time and money editing it. (I'm biased on censoring though.)

When hasn't a manga company ever acted rationally?

Um, they do all the time, it's just that the people who whine about them doing bad things rarely praise them for a job well (or at least adequately) done. It's the nature of the internet.

Editing the title for racy content at least makes some sense if they felt that it was necessary to increase sales. But the mature content label pretty much negates that as does releasing it unedited after 10 volumes or editing out 99% of the nipples and racy content (one scene around volume 6 or so survived since the person wasn't acutally nude and was just wearing a suit intended to make them appear nude).
Most edits make sense (even if you disagree with them) if you assume that the publishers felt it was necessary to reduce the rating in order to increase sales or to avoid complaints from parents which could also hurt sales. You get some edits that don't make sense (like editing a series after the same or worse was in previous as in Flame of Recca, or nipples are removed while the sexual assault of the person they belong to is still there as in Tsukuyomi Moon Phase), but a majority at least make some sense from a sales perspective.

We expect companies to do an at least adequate job. The only time we feel it's necessary to say anything is when either the company does something exceptionally good or something bad.
It's part of human nature.

Del Rey with Air Gear, perhaps?
I agree with HitokiriShadow on the comment made on his 2nd post. As Richard J. stated, they could have just put the warning on it to begin with. What interests me is that a SJ-related title is getting this, especially since the SJ brand mostly appeals to kids/teens. =\
But there were other things other than nipples that've been edited? What "racy content" would this be, HitokiriShadow?

I've only read the Viz version, so I don't know what's coming up in future volumes. As far as I know, nipples and some bare bottoms (maybe, not sure on that) are all that's been edited out of I"s. Some sexual references may have been toned down as well. Up to this point, there has not been any actual sex, though I'm guessing the main character will eventually "get some" at some point.

I thought they edited AG1 due to a rape scence?

At least, that's what I've read in other threads here. I'm not following Air Gear myself, but I like to keep abreast of any incidences of censorship or extremely bad translating. Helps me to know what to avoid.
Supposedly, all printings after the first of Volume 1 should contain the rape element. I think they handled it the same way as the translation screw up in Volume 3 of Negima! where they called the Thousand Master the "Southern Master" and other mistakes. They corrected them in future printings but I don't think they recalled the earlier printings.
