No, not about DBZ, so go away, theres another thread on it anyway.

So I was at the Borders mapping out what Anime DVD's i'm gonna get on the next 30% coupon, and I noticed something funny. On alot of the FUNi DVD's, it seems that part of the DVD cover is "caught" on the Security Sticker or the Top Sticker.

Now, out of 90 FUNi DVD's on the shelf, I noticed 35 had this anomoly. At least 10 DVD's I was eyeing are making me second guess. Now I have to ask, does FUNi know about this? I'm only imagining that if one were to try to remove the sticker from the cover, the sticker would rip off part of the DVD cover.

I can't say that I own an extensive Funimation library, but I do have some of their titles and have not had this problem with any of them.

Besides, I don't think it's a Funimation only problem. The paper insert only has to be a little bit out of alignment to get above the plastic cover and get the security tape stuck to it. Sometimes you can get it off without damaging anything and sometimes not. I had this problem with several of the Geneon disks I bought at the Rightstuf sale last fall. Most of them were OK, but the whole top edge of one of the Stellvia covers (which is a shiny, foil looking cover) came off which was a bit of a bummer.

It's not just FUNimation in my experience, Geneon has the problem too. I count about 6 out of 25 of my DVD cases have damage from that. I doubt it's a company issue as much as an inherent problem in the type of cases anime use, but that does sound much higher than average... probably just a coincidence, but you never know.

EDIT: Heh, 3 of those cases were the Stellvia ones Rolling Eyes maybe it's a production line related issue. Like they used the same set of broken machines to produce each volume of a show or something silly like that.

I find that my highest ratio of sticker on paper will have to go to Media Blasters. Media Blasters also seem to have a gooier adhesive that is harder to peel off. The highest ratio of broken cases goes to Bandai. Of course a good portion of my recent Funimation purchases are digipaks which lower the security sticker problem.

I hate to hear that about Media Blasters since I am planning to purchase some of their more expensive series at some point this year.

Most of my stuff is Funi and Geneon and I also agree with selenta and ManOfRust about Geneon. I have had more problems with their cases than any other company. Not just with the singles either. I'm still really sad that there are two volumes in my Samurai Champloo box that I can't take the security tape off completely because it would then, of course, tear the covers. I'm going to wait to see if they come off after the glue dries a bit, this has worked in the past.

Sure FUNI has this problem, but its hardly exclusive to them. When I bought Utawarerumono vol. 1, all of the volumes I saw at BB had this problem, so I had to pick the one with the least of it (fortunately, one had almost none of the cover exposed). I'm sure I've had this problem with Geneon as well though I can't remember anything specific.

I generally have the sticker problem on Geneon releases too.

Although I did have an unpleasant issue with Funimation back when I was buying Spiral/the first parts of FMA and Kodocha... the majority of those DVDs came in foul-smelling cases. Like the burnt rubber smell our vaccum cleaner makes when something gets caught in the belt. It was not pleasant. (Luckily, the problem subsided.)

You're supposed to watch the DVDs, not smell them! Smile jk

I've never actually heard of a funky smelling case. I'm glad to hear it went away.

As for the sticker issues, Abarenbo Shogun, did you actually count all the DVDs at Borders? That's hardcore! You should make some sort of a bar graph or pie chart to represent these findings! Smile

In all seriousness, I wonder if the companies are aware of these issues... I mean, we all spend our hard-earned cash on these releases, and many people are seriously concerned with art work and box material and the like. Although I don't really care about packaging, if it is getting damaged just from opening, that's a major problem that should be looked at.

I can't believe people HAVEN'T heard of this. I don't think I've opened a single video game case that didn't have that rancorous odor.

Hmm, looked through all my DVDs for this problem and came up with FUNimation having the most DVDs with part of the cover teared. 6/13 Full Metal Alchemist DVDs of mine had this problem. 2/4 Kiddy Grade DVDs also had the covers ripped. And 1/3 Gunslinger Girl DVDs. Next would be Geneon for me. It was just one The SoulTaker DVD that had the problem though, none of my others had the problem. I actually had no problem with any of my Stellvia DVDs I got from that Geneon sale at Rightstuf a while ago, all of them are completely unharmed.

Now that sticky adhesive problem... I have too many DVDs to count with that, it's pretty much all DVDs though. Is annoying...

you talkin' to me?! Twisted Evil
Luckily I haven't had that rubber smell, I've only gotten the "new case" smell that I love. I smell my DVDs daily! ok, not really.

I know I've had that sticker problem on 1 or 2 of my DVDs, but I can't seem to find which ones. But does anyone else hate it when they put that security tag on a place where it can't be removed? I always take those things out after buying a DVD, but in my .Hack//SIGN AL set, (I got the folding book style one) they put that damn tag underneath the plastic part that holds the disk, there's no way I can get it out without destroying the packaging! Mad

I don't know what it is about those things, but I have an irrational hatred of them too. I always take them out, and it really bugs me when they put it somewhere that is both virtually impossible to get at but is also plainly visible. Evil or Very Mad

I guess this is kind of OT, but since this has developed into a bit of a more general topic about DVD packaging I'll throw it out there. A useful trick for getting rid of the goo that the particularly gummy stickers leave behind it to take a little wad of scotch tape and just kind of dab at the sticky stuff left on the DVD case. The scotch tape will usually pull it off the case. It takes a while sometimes, but it's the best solution I have found yet for this problem.

FUNi does know about this, and I believe they've made requests to their replicator to try and avoid it, as it was affecting a large number of copies over multiple series for some time. They do, however, still need to work on heat-sealing the plastic wrap, as it's done on the spine and seems to be getting worse as time goes on. The copy of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles I picked up had had its plastic wrap heat-sealed so well that when I pulled it off, a perfect rectangle was left fused to the keepcase plastic on the spine.

They also need to work on not covering their generally nice slipcovers with stickers, but one thing at a time, perhaps.

Geneon has taken steps to avoid the security-tape-stuck-to-cover-insert issue in the past, which is why it's been fairly limited for them. They too were having heat-sealing-to-spine problems, but they've recently been through a replicator switch (which, in case anyone was wondering, is contributing greatly to the delays and spotty availability of recent and upcoming releases, so it should be getting a lot better starting... now) and heat-sealing is now done on the side opposite the spine (i.e., the side with the fingerholds for opening the keepcase), so no more problems. This has started to appear with all recent releases, so anyone who's bought releases like Shana volume 3, Gun Sword volume 5, Ergo Proxy volume 2, The Law of Ueki volume 5, etc., should have noticed it (or, perhaps not noticed it, since it's not a problem anymore).

Plain white masking tape works especially well, I've found.

Only good at observing and not really good at other stuff. I was labelled by my school as a "Latent Prodigy" at one point. You could say i'm a real-life Shikamaru Nara.
