I just finished watching onegai teacher...
For a long time I'd always heard the same things about this anime..."It's real good, but it's got a bad ending." so I simply wouldn't bother with it. But I was bored the other day so I looked up the specifics on the anime. I noticed it was only 12 episodes (13 including the OVA) which I love, and noticed it was written by Yousuke Kuroda whom I really like, so I figured what the hell, I'd give it a shot.
I watched the whole thing in one night. I'm usually not big on most romance comedy anime save a few (love hina, Midori no Hibi) and I LOVED this anime. Mainly due to the fact that the relationships actually progress in the anime. I've been pretty sick of seeing the same thing in romance anime... "This guy likes her, but she likes the other guy.... and nothing ever happens." anime like Ichigo 100% and Honey and Clover get points for their good writing and humor, but really piss me off in that nothing ever tends to progress as far as the characters relationships.
In conclusion the anime was brilliant in my eyes, great in just about every way and had a fantastic ending in my opinion. So I gotta stop listening to people when they tell me something has a bad ending I guess. lol
Agree? Disagree?

I usually hate harem anime and even have troubles getting through Ah My Goddess and can't stand Love Hina. I went into Please Teacher really skepticly with this in mind and waited to buy the recent Bandai brick since I skipped it when it was originally released due to what I consider a really corny trailer. I was pleasantly surprised by the series and found myself charmed by the characters.
I will agree that the plot moves forward unlike many other series where there is an indecisive protagonist who seems to constantly make bad choices. The whole "poor me all these girls love me what should I do" plot just annoys me. Kei is really only in love with one person, and the other characters are obstacles for him. I wonder if the "stand still" is a conscious jab at the genre since so many of these shows seem to stand still.
I also like the tragic aspects to almost all of the characters past. My favorite character is probably Ichigo, I love the sibling styled relationship and understanding she shares with Kei. Thank goodness the creators didn't make her into just another girl that Kei has a crush on. I'm also glad she returns in Please Twins.
I like the end of the series and was afraid that it was going to end with Kei forgetting about Mizuho and ending up with Herikawa since their relationship would be more appropriate. This would have felt forced and rather sad to me. The 13th episode was completely over the top and reminded me of the last episode of Excel. I can't imagine not liking that episode.
I gotta agree with you on every aspect but one there Randall .... ICHIGO
She's a fairly generic character there are ton of depressed, dark little girls in anime already (Evangelion, Fruits Basket) get the hell over it and start enjoying your life a little. It may be just that my personal outlook on life that makes me dislike these characters, but I just can't stand 'em.
Have you seen or know about the Please Twins series? it takes place 2 years after the end of Please Teacher and most of the people from Please Teacher are in Please Twins but its a whole new story. I found it to be pretty good would not say its horrible but not a master piece either...

I actually enjoyed Please Teacher, but Please Twins was highly unimpressive in my view. Teacher was odd and amusing while Twins was just dull and boring. It's not that I was hoping anybody would actually hook-up, they were all just kids anyway, but the plot simply bored the hell out of me and I didn't really care what happened to any of them. The first volume was acceptable since it was mainly busy introducing the cast but it quickly went downhill after that. The plot was so lifeless that it gave you plenty of time to wonder just what the heck they saw in each other anyway. In fact by the third volume of Twins the episodes didn't seem to be moving the basic story along much at all. I had the whole set arrive from netflix and all I can say is that I was glad to get the last one back in the mail so I could look forward to better times ahead.

I watched Onegai Twins! before Onegai Teacher! and found the former more touching than its predecessor. I lent both series to my sister and she had questions about the premise of Onegai Teacher! to the point where it sounded like she was asking questions about the plot of an Ed Wood movie. She didn't like Onegai Twins! as much as I liked it. I enjoyed its story line, the characters, the small doses of teen angst and its comic elements. Actually, on second thought, the teen angst component was a fairly significant underlying force in keeping the plot moving. If that doesn't get onto your radar then the series doesn't have much to it. If anything I really enjoyed its soundtrack and the way the music was tightly integrated with the story and it's emotional impact.
My round about way of evaluating the two series was to think about what it would take to adapt the stories as stage plays. Onegai Teacher! trips itself harder in this approach because of the difficulties a playwright would face in getting the audience to buy into two characters having the "Stand still" condition where they don't physically age (and not withstanding Mizuho as an extraterrestrial or her family). With Onegai Twins! it wouldn't be difficult to remove the parts where Marie-sama plays a role in the story. Having done that one could come up with a workable script dealing with the search for family and past whilst trying to cultivate one's identity and deal with new found affection and possibly love.
As an SF romance with comic elements, I think Onegai Teacher! works well. I don't see where people can say it has a bad ending. I felt the ending episodes were quite strong in terms of working me for an emotional response or getting me to connect with the story and characters. The story kicks off with a wild adventure of an evening and settles into a some enjoyable plot twists and side stories.

Well, I just finished watching onegai twins and the general concensus was correct. Not nearly as good as onegai teacher.
One of my favorite things about Onegai Teacher was the twists and general sense of surprise at each turn of the story and character relationships. This one was almost the opposite, I saw just about every twist coming from a mile away, like a curve ball thrown by a 6 year old, for example: .The simple relationships between the characters made it very easy to discover which one of the girls was his sister
One of my other favorite things about Teacher was how the relationships actually progressed. So many anime (Ichigo, Honey and Clover) are plagued by the monotiny of the relationships never progressing for whatever reason. Once again, Twins did not deliver in the ways that Teacher did. The relationships remained ultimately the same until the eventual obvious conclusion was reached.
Also didn't like the new twist the older character Shidou has in this one. In the previous anime, he was just the poor sad little loner. In this one they turned him into the psychopathic and might I add disgusting little perv who's constantly trying to bang his sister. It was an unnecessary aspect to me.
Ultimately, it was an okay anime. I think it got more points than it should have from me simply because it was based in the same world of a previous anime I really liked

I bought the 'Anime Legends' box set of Teacher, & really, I wasn't all that thrilled with it. It had its cute parts & some pleasant fan service, but overall, I found it to be quite forgettable. I'm glad I got it on the cheap. The OVA episode was funny, much more bawdy than I expected. I would've loved the series had it been like the OVA. I watched a download of Twins, & thought less of it than Teacher.

I found the scene in the OVA when kei and mizuho had sex to be interesting.

Onegai Teacher was a much better show then Onegai Twins. Teacher was very heart felt and had a fair number of common issues real students go through. The comedy was in the right spots to lighten the mood but it never got too silly. The ending was just tear jerker central. I also think the OVA at the end was a nice funnier way to end the series. I always wondered what if Kei forgot Mizuho and got with her mom?! That would've been interesting.
Twins just seemed to go no where. The serious elements were there, as in Teacher, but weren't delivered as well as Teacher. The comedy seemed more forced and awkward in Twins as well. It was a cute show but a good notch or two below Teacher. The fact they turned Ichigo from such a depressed sad kid into such a freakin nut job was really stupid. I mean they made her into some manic freak show spying on people where in Teacher she was serious and just wanted to help Koishi. In Twins she was just freaky.

Out of curiosity, I was just wondering what it was that you didn't like about it. What improvements could there have been and what anime in the romance comedy genre did you feel were superior and for what reasons.
Personally I've seen quite a few anime in that genre and the only ones I found remotely redeaming were Love Hina and Midory no Hibi. And I found this one to be one of the best among a repetative and predictable genre.

I finally got around to watching the rest of Twins and also found it a mixed bag. One of the reasons why I like Please Teacher was that I had written this series off when the original volumes were being released. It wasn't until the brick came out that I decided to buy the series on a whim and found it much better than I had expected. Twins didn't have this advantage.
I really enjoyed how Twins has a nice crossover with Teacher but doesn't rely on it. I also enjoy the lack of the SF element (or reduced) which would have felt like a gimmick and crutch. I'm still a bit confused about the end of the tv series where it is stated that Miina (IIRC) is the one in the picture and that Karin was asleep off camera while the picture was taken and that they all belong at the house. Either way it would seem as though the diary states without a doubt that Karin is the sister, but who is Miina? Is she the neighbor's kid, or just a random friend?

I had the EXACT opposite reaction. I was rooting for Kei to end up with Herikawa and because I knew the whole time that that WOULDN'T happen, the series just frustrated me. Add onto that that I never felt the series gave any good reason whatsoever why Kei should end up with Mizuho (yeah, she's very nice and all, but they don't seem to have any deep connection to pull them together the way, say, Keiichi and Belldandy do in Oh My Goddess! and I found the entire series lacking.
These aspects made it so I didn't just dislike Please Teacher, I COULDN'T STAND IT. I found the summer vacation episode and the sequel OAV to be pretty enjoyable, but slogging my way through the rest of the series was like bashing my head into a wall.

Aha I found someone who thought of the same things.
I just finished please teacher last week - I couldn't wait to finish it cause it took so much out of me just to watch it. I thought the characters lacked charisma, especially that kaede girl who dresses up like a dowdy lolita.
The chemistry between Kei and Mizuho didn't work either - she WAS too old for him, and how can a hottie like her hook up with a nerd like Kei? For most of the series I was like "Why do all these chicks like Kei? sheesh"
Other than that, it's either the the bad fansub I got (but then again, I don't think I'll watch it even if it was a good fansub) or the fact that I was watching series alongside it that were WAY better.
EDIT: grammatical mistakes
