Know this will make a lot of guys cringe possibly, but has anyone ever wanted any anime heroes to fight dirty? For example someone powerful like Aizen or Madara to be on the receiving end of a kick to the family jewels? Part of me has wondered a few times should guys be resulted to trying that to see if it works, or is it just not done in anime?

It isn't about a "hero" it is about the character, if the character seems pragmatic like say Jotaro then being a "dirty" fighter is certainly in the cards for them, on the flip side if they are some sort of overly noble character then certainly it would be out of character to fight in a manner that "isn't honorable".

If you're talking specifically about kicks to the nuts, I would hope that male characters in fighting-heavy shows all wear cups. In Naruto, I'm sure they come in a matching pair with the forehead protectors.

if it's a life or death fight, yes by all means, all's fair in love and war as the saying goes. I know I wouldn't hesitate to fight dirty if it bettered my chances of surviving a deadly situation. If they are not fighting for their lives than, no, that would just make the character a douchebag if they're kicking their opponents in the nads just to win.

"I would have beat you in a fair fight!"

"Well, that's no incentive to fight fair, is it?"

I can't say I've specifically wanted any anime heros to fights dirty. I haven't actively wanted them not to either though. The way characters fight definitely influences how I see them. For instance if our hero is a weakling that was thrown into a fight with no chance of winning I won't discourage him/her from using cheap tactics. In this case I'd see the hero as someone who'll do whatever it takes to survive, and I'd probably commend them for it.

I'm fine with it so long as they're not a knight or something.

In fact, a noble knight taking a cheap shot in a fight he would have otherwise died in sets up for some good development for him. Does he re-state his vows and regret his choice? Does he swear it's the last time? Does he wear it's the last time but does it again later? Does he get enticed by the thrill of roguish battle?

So yeah, I hope a noble hero goes through that sometimes. It's really all in how the character is written.

If the hero is participating in an athletic event. No he should not fight dirty. Poor sportsmanship. This would include even potentially lethal matches in medieval settings.

In a street fight, a war there are no rules (just don't destroy the world). If coercion is used to get the person into the fight, anything goes.

For me it depends on the battle and the character. If they're SUPPOSED to be a more noble character than fighting dirty would simply conflict with that image. If it's a sporting event, using Slam Dunk or Big Windup for examples, than no they shouldn't. Now if we're talking about a good ole FIGHT of any kind (be it bare fisted, weapons, mechs, etc) and they're not supposed to be holier than thou then I think they should do what it takes. I tend to prefer imperfect heroes. Ones that do what needs to be done, have blood on their hands, and have to find ways to live with not being perfect and slightly tarnished. Adds more depth to their character I think.

Of course they should fight dirty. You can't continue to uphold your precious honour and protect your values and loved ones if you die against an opponent you otherwise could have beaten. An evil opponent certainly won't be holding back against you (unless they're stupid or over-confident), so don't hold back against them.

Depends whether there is a rules. I think that I can recall some funny parts in Fairy Tail where the good characters have been a little sneaky. I think the only main character who has not tried would be Erza who is honourable to a fault.

Like others have said, it SHOULD mostly depend on the personalities of the characters involved... but I believe tone and genre should definitely be taken into consideration as well. I mean, could you imagine: Series: Trigun. It's High Noon and Vash has finally decided to take responsibility for Knives after an emotional buildup over 25 episodes. BUT! Before anyone has a chance to draw, we cut to Knives writhing on the floor after a most prompt lesson in the importance of sports cups from Vash? On second thought...

I have never wanted a hero to fight dirty but I have wanted a hero to not be noble or naive or heroic or follow the shounen hero rule book or just be plain stupid.

In a situation in which a villain is trying to destroy a city of several million people and the hero catches him but he has time to point a weapon at an innocent civilian, then demands the hero disarm and expose himself, I really would prefer the hero not choose that time to show how honorable, noble and righteous he can be since only in fiction would that not get him, the civilian and the city destroyed.

It would be nice if in situations like that the hero would do a risk assessment and think outside the box and make some difficult decisions without completely compromising his ideals.

I would also be happy if heroes stopped trusting obviously untrustworthy villains. "Come alone and unarmed to this location!" Yeah right!

I would also like it if heroes didn't simply let villains go free when they have defeated them because they didn't want to kill them. There are other alternatives to letting homicidal mass murders walk free besides killing them.

Yes, always. One of the few things I enjoyed in Bleach post Soul Society Arc was captain Shunsui. When he was fighting the 1st espada he'd always use a dirty move like attacking when he was distracted, throwing his hat to block his vision, attacking from behind,... and when someone asked him if he had no honor (or something like that) he said:

"Throwing away victory for the sake of manners is a rookie mistake. Captains don't have the time to waste on that kind of thing. Don't waste your time trying to play the good guy. No matter what debts you may owe, from the instant you find yourself on the battleground, both sides are evil."

This really made me like him.

Yes. If that it what it takes to win.

In a serious, rather than comedic, situation where his opponent is going to kill innocent people if he is not stopped then the hero must do whatever is necessary to prevent that.
Anybody who would risk the lives of others to preserve his own honor is not a hero.

That is what is made it difficult for me to watch Trigun, though I did finish it.

And, as dtm42 pointed out, a dead hero cannot save anybody.
