I ended up watching episode 2 last night (without my brother). Oh, how beautiful and gloriously violent it was. I can't wait for the next episode. Maybe we'll even get it this year if we are lucky.

Geneon decides to stay with one every 6 months then we should hopefully have vol 3 in stores by Christmas. I really hope that is true because I really want to see what vol 3 is like in good quality. Also did anyone listen to the interview with the Valentine Brothers? That was pretty funny and really informing all at the same time, definitely a change from Crispin interview on the last volume. Also the trailer for Black Lagoon was so sweet if that doesn't get you pump up for that show I don't know what will. |

Yeah, it's much more laid-back than it was with Freeman. Though something tells me that they're just throwing these intervews together for the heck of it so we'll have something to watch on the extras disc But it's nice to know they at least try to take it seriously while at the same time having fun this time around. I agree in what they said about how their past experience in the TV series made things a little easier for the OAV. It's also funny how when Jaffe told them to say something in-character, Josh Phillips (Jan) just spat out a bunch of random f-bombs Oh, and Phillips also mentioned something about auditioning for the role of The Joker (from Batman), and did anyone else notice Jaffe's purple suit and almost greenish hair? Hm.. me thinks it's a subtle message .
Anyway, I'll try to get around to posting pics and caps of Vol.2 later. But here are some old pics of LE Vol.1 I had posted a while back in another thread: [EDIT: Uploaded the pics to Image Bam, since I can't stand Photo Bucket, anymore. -TK] Last edited by Tony K. on Thu Jul 31, 2014 1:07 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Well I happened to have some pics of the vol 2 LE, although I didn't take pictures of all the art, considering there's over 100 pages your going to have buy that in order to see it. And damn is it impressive.
Starting off with censored cover The uncensored cover, and yes cover is sure to point it out to you. The back of the metalic case, pretty similar to the vol 1 back. The inside case also very similar to the first volume. Mini poster of Sir Hellsing Front cover of the artbook. And yes that is my new carpet! It feels so soft on your feet. |

Well, this volume is almost exactly 6 months after the first, so odds are good we'll see volume 3 in December. When I had said that, I had thought the first volume came out in November, making it 7 months between the two volumes. Of course, its always possible something will delay the next release, but let's hope not.
I'll watch those someday, but I'm too busy working on my backlog to worry much about lengthier extras like those. I'll be rewatching Hellsing Ultimate in English at some point and I'll be sure to check out the extras then.
Actually seeing some of it should do the trick. But yeah, that was a kick ass trailer. |

So, I have a couple of questions here. I already know there are 8 volumes in this series, so does each episode follow 1 full volume of the manga, meaning there will be 8 episodes? Also, with each new U.S. DVD release, is there just 1 episode on it? Just wondering is all.

Geneon originally wanted to place two episodes per release. This means that the first volume would have been delayed, and we would have to wait a year between volumes much the situation with Yukikaze, and Karas. While the low episode count is annoying the standard edition has a retail price of $25, which I think is still a bit high. The 2 disc special edition is a much better deal in my opinion.

Yep. 1 episode of anime = 1 volume of manga. Supposedly, Hirano is going to end the series around Vol.10, so that would make it 10 episodes. As for the U.S. DVDs, they've already gone the route of the Japanese with one episode per release as well. But like Randall said, the LE sets are a pretty good deal, especially if you consider getting them online for a lot cheaper than the SRP. I paid something like $29 for my LE Vol.2 during a Geneon sale from RightStuf. |

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, thanks. I'm definitely going to get the 2 disc releases since they sound like the better deal, and that means if it is going to be 10 episodes, that I'll only have to get 5 volumes instead of 10. |

Wrong you'll still have to get 10 volume (maybe more if they animate the Dawn). The Special edition that were speaking about don't come with two episodes. Its still one but it comes with a bonus dvd a nice metallic case and also extras like figures or artbook. So if you wanted to watch the entire series you'll still need to buy/rent 10 volumes. When Randall was talking about the better price he meant that for a few extra dollars you get more bang for your buck, I agree considering that you get an extra disc that's pretty sweet along with some sort of other extra. |

Actually, like Delta said, the 2-disc sets are still *one* episode apiece. The main feature is on disc 1, while disc 2 has extras like an interview, trailers, commercials, and art galleries. What Randall was saying is that Geneon wanted to put two episodes a disc, but instead they just tried to make the LE sets as fancy as possible, thus the steelbook packaging, the extras disc, and whatever flashy item they decide to include. Personally, I'm happy with what I'm getting. But if you don't want to pay around $30 for just one episode (though a very, very finely constructed one, at that, and especially if you're a surround sound enthusiast like myself) and a few extras, then it's up to you. The pictures of the LE sets should sort of speak for themselves, but be aware that if you get the regular editions that you're only getting the episode in Dolby Digital 2.0 (again, it depends on your sound setup or preferences). (7/31/014) EDIT: This marks my first restoration effort. Please enjoy it. Volume I (clicking this will take you back to the Index) ---------------------------------- Plot Summary The town of Cheddar is under attack by a priest-gone-vampire. He's turned a bunch of the townsfolk and a few police officers into ghouls, and the authorities have called (or maybe were assigned)? the Hellsing organization to come in and help out with the unique problem. The mysterious Alucard easily (and flashily) disposes of the priest, but in the process had to shoot a whole in the chest of one Seres Victoria. To save her, he makes her a Draculina and brings her into the Hellsing fold. Upon gaining her new powers, Alucard takes Seres for a little training to kill a couple of other lowly vampires, where she begins to realize some of the depth in her ability. Later, a vampire attack in Badrick (North Ireland) piques the interest of The Vatican, who sends out their top agent of Division XIII (Iscariot), Alexander Anderson to deal with the threat to show the power and authority within their jurisdictions. However, Alucard and Seres are already there. But being the zealot he is, Anderson decides to confront and wipe them out in the name of the Catholic church. A bloody battle ensues, resulting in Anderson's withdrawal, and a mysterious figure just before the credits spouts of more war to come. ---------------------------------- Comments I haven't seen the TV series in a while (maybe a decade, at least), but considering how vastly different I remember it turning out to be, I'm not even sure I'll consider it comparable to the other two renditions (manga and OAV). Although, I have listened to the soundtracks time and time again, so I'll at least give it props for that. I did, however, read the first volume of the manga after watching this first episode, and I have to say, for the most part it's a fairly accurate storyboard. Some of the flashback stuff is more interspersed and not quite as fleshed-out as it could've been (same for the Leif & Jessica slaughtering). But overall, it was a pretty good first episode. Hellsing has and always will be a series that relishes in stylized action, gore, and vampire mythology. And this episode is no exception. My big likes are the artwork, voice acting (aside from the Japanese VA for that priest), and yes, even the music. I know, i know; Yasushi Ishii did *awesome* work with the his acid/experimental/hard rock soundtrack. Even as Engrishy as it was, it gave the TV series a unique aura that only made the franchise feel even *more* stylized. But after listening to Hayato Matsuo's score, it's actually grown on my quite a bit. The orchestral stuff is a nice addition for mood changes, and the action pieces have some cools sounds and tempos to them, as well. The problem, I've noticed, though, is that they don't play enough of it, at least in this first episode. I feel the arrangement and composition themselves make for some great ambiance for the action and tension. But I notice there are way too many quiet spots when they should, instead, be filling it with music to actually build for something. Also, after reading the first volume of the manga, I have to say I am *really* grateful for the character designs they decided to go with. In the manga, everybody looks so lanky and stringy. Sure, there's a lot of depth and detail in facial features and the like, but everyone looks so much fuller in the anime. I was especially pleased with the color and camera angles as well (as you can see in all those screen-caps). The animation seems pretty fluid, for the most part, though I think this OAV could rely a little less on the camera pans and trust more in the movement itself (which, thankfully, it does more of in some of the later episodes). There were a few instances where the panning (and the aforementioned absence of music) kinda' slowed things down a bit too much. I also wish Alucard was a bit more chatty in the anime, as that adds to his baddass-ness in the manga. But Jouji Nakata has freakin' awesome voice as it is, so I'm good with anything he says, even if it's not a lot. As of this post, I have not watched any of the other episodes yet (well, at least re-watched them in a while), in hopes that I'll actually notice some improvements in the production itself. From what I remember, they do get better. And I'm eagerly awaiting the point of where Madhouse takes over, as they're one of my favorite studios, especially for action pieces. ---------------------------------- Screen-caps Last edited by Tony K. on Fri Aug 08, 2014 5:54 pm; edited 6 times in total |

Oh.........okay I made kind of a mistake there, sorry.
Yeah, in that case I'll probably just get the LE version, since my sound quality is probably suited better for 2.0 Dolby Digital anyways, although the special features on the 2-disc set sound pretty neat. Awesome screencaps Tony! |

Wait do you have 5.1 sound or not? The LE are for people who want 5.1 mixes in both Japanese and English along with other bonuses. Whereas the standard releases have 2.0 on both audio and 5.1 for English. |

No, I just have the standard 2.0, but the bonuses on the LE are what would interest me. Of course, I'll settle for the standard as well. In fact, that might be the one I'll just have to settle for. |

FYI:
Suncoast has an Volume #2 exclusive LE tin edition without the book on sale fo $20 this week. $15 if you buy any other DVD that's not on sale. And it's also a Geneon 2 for 1 sale week. So you can get it for free with the purchase of another Geneon title. Or buy 2 (one for you and another for a friend) for $10 each using the buy one get one for free. I don't think people can complain about getting it at that price. Well then again there's always somebody who can complain about anything. Regards, JK |
