I've heard a lot of this manga and I've heard that its really good and all, but would it be good for a guy? Does it have too much girly stuff in it, or is it ok for me to read?

Why don't you just check out the longest thread in Manga forum yourself?

Maybe he doesn't want spoilers. Anyway, Fruits Basket has an excellent story, but it indeed can get pretty girly. Tons of pretty boys and lots of drama, especially in the later issues. Not romance drama (like, dating, breakup, does-he-like-me drama), but messed up family backgrounds, abuse, trying to escape hopeless situations, and that kind of drama. However, if you don't mind a healthy dose of bishies, I say give it a whirl. It's still a very good manga, and has a mix of comedy and drama (although, as I said, it's a lot lighter in the beginning). It's one of my favorite series. |

It's not as sugary as alot of series, and as kyokun pointed out it slowly gets more serious (about a handful of the characters will break your heart if you don't have ice running through your veins), so don't be fooled by the light beginning. It deals with many different kinds of relationships, whether they be romantic, familial or friendship. One of the characters is openly bisexual (his first crush was a straight male cousin who's now his best friend), another male character is a fashion designer (with all the obvious innuendo that implies), and the fashion designer and some other characters are crossdressers, if any of that type of thing bothers you - but if that's an issue for you keep in mind that they're only a handful of characters out of a very large cast. Overall, it's not a bad first shojo series for a guy who's open to relationship-driven series rather than action.
P.S. - Avoid the Fruits Basket thread like the plague until you finish the series if you don't want to be spoiled. The last time I looked about a year ago it was heavily, heavily slanted towards those following the original Japanese rather than the English translation (which has about another year and a half to go depending on release dates of the remaining volumes). I'd imagine that the ending has become fair game in that thread. |

In other words, even these elements shouldn't keep a manly man away. Besides, the dramatic elements and the flowing plot are extremely engrossing. I'd watched the anime before and liked it, but the manga is much stronger. While it's got plenty of good comedy, it can really hurt when it wants to. This is a series I'd recommend to anyone who likes drama, comedy, light fantasy, romance, or slice of life stories. There are elements of all these and probably a few other things I'm forgetting in Fruits Basket. The first volume has a fairly complete arc feel to it, so if you buy it and don't like it, you won't feel too bad if you decide to drop it. However, I'm not sure anyone could drop this one once started. The character designs and art style is fantastic as well, complementing the plot perfectly. |

I believe that's what makes him bisexual. He likes guys and girls... |

The first half of the thread yes, there were those of us who were following the series through other means and those who were getting the Japanese volumes as soon as they were coming out. The ending itself gives the thread probably a good ten pages worth or so. I think the thread now after the ending excitement has died down is now able to cater to those who are still reading the English versions, or at least the later parts of the thread. To the OP, I think it's a great series for guys to read. Sure you're going to find all sorts of issues in there, but it's nothing that is in the extreme. |

You'd be seriously missing out if you weren't to read this series.
'Sides, didn't Fruits Basket with the Mecha for 'Best Manga Of The Year' last year? I think that puts the last nail in the coffin... Personally, I just love the characters in this series. They're all loveable, except for those dang Yuki Fangirls. They ruin everything. |

Although, personally, I'm not so sure Hatsuharu can really be called bisexual since, at least as far as I've read in the manga, there's no specific mention of him having sexual interests in men. Simply saying one's first love was his straight male cousin (Yuki unless I'm horribly confused) doesn't necessarily mean he wanted to have sex with him. Not all love is romantic/sexual in nature and Hatsuharu has a habit of phrasing things in a very peculiar way. All the moments I remember of Hatsuharu making a sexual advance on anyone have involved women. Anyway, I was mainly just saying that if shounen-ai/Yaoi content was a "No Sale" issue for the OP, then he shouldn't worry about it and buy Fruits Basket anyway. |

Nah, Yaoi doesn't bother me. I'll definetly check in out after I look at a few others.

I'm a guy and really didn't care for it. I'm a pretty big fan of shoujou anime but I found Fruits Basket intolerable for some reason. Not entirely just the plot or characters or anything but I also hated the art style and found the frames to be unnecessarily busy at times.
I only read the first volume (well, read the first half and skimmed the rest) so I have a bit of a time justifying my opinion to other people but on the bright side I'd say that there is little fundamentally wrong with Fruits Basket and theres no reason to hate someone for reading it. |

That's the thing though, there really is no yaoi themes in it. |

Oh, I thought you or someone else said there were. Well, either way, I'll check it out when I go to my local Barns and Noble. |

The worse there is is Yuki getting oddly close to Kyo whenever they're fighting...but that's about it. |

Yikes! I created a monster!
O.k. - as everyone's been saying, BigSmokin, no Yaoi, no Yaoi and - oh yeah - no Yaoi. We're just talking a little shonen-ai here - and it eventually becomes a moot issue because one of the parties is straight and the other has therefore moved on. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of some elements in the story in case you were conservative. I think we can all agree that Fruits Basket is great and BigSmokin should read it. |
