Guess it's appropriate that he's contributed music to the Rurouni Kenshin flicks, huh?

I wouldn't have thought Japan would have cared. This is a country where they oversexualise children in anime constantly and a known Mangaka got a paltry telling off for having a bunch of child pornography.

It's normal over there.

And so we judge an entire country by the actions of a few.

I'm not saying that laws couldn't be harsher over there but that's an over generalization if I've ever heard one.

You realise it was the Government that made it so that the Mangaka had a paltry fine right? That's how law works over there. They don't really care, holding on to stashes of child pornography gets a slap on the wrist.

You would be done if that happened in US or Europe. Locked away for months maybe years.

That's just how they are in Japan, they're more naturally perverse that's why you get used underwear vending machines.

This band has dealt with this sort of incident before. A former guitarist was discovered to have assaulted some high school girls on a train, leading to his expulsion from the band years ago.

While what Tomoya did was certainly not right, the girl got bashed pretty good because she sold the story to the tabloids (and it wasn't the first time-- she approached a TV station first but they passed on it after finding out she was a minor at the time it happened). She also expressed jealousy that Tomoya got married with someone else and was angry that he suddenly stopped contacting her after she graduated.

With the timing being 7 years after the fact and during ONE OK ROCK's "with Orchestra" tour (which was AWESOME btw), most people are under the impression that she's only now coming out with this motivated by money and jealousy. Hard to feel sympathetic towards someone like that even though, again, what Tomoya did was not right. I don't fault her for coming out about this, but the manner in which she did it makes people question her credibility and motives.

I'm glad the band will continue on. Was seriously worried that something similar like Alex's situation would happen. It wouldn't be ONE OK ROCK without Tomoya.

Yeah, don't know what I'd do without these guys.

It was one girl, and he touched her leg.

Sorry for the nitpick, but you might want to clarify that their major debut single was released in 2007. They had a couple indies CDs before that.

This is why I try to be as non-judgemental as is humanly possible ─ which is quite difficult to do. There is invariably an existing POV that one fails to take into consideration.....

Certainly. On the other hand, some people are scoffing at fans, saying that they are blinded when it comes to scandals involving people they like. I think fans' reactions would have been a lot different had it occurred more recently, weren't published in a tabloid that most certainly paid money for the story, and if the girl didn't make herself out to be a jealous ex.

Please get your facts straight. It was consensual. Doesn't excuse what Tomoya did because it was with a minor, but it was not rape.

When I read the headline I expected something quite bad but then I read she was 16 and I don't know. Maybe it's cause I'm from the UK where this would be fine (if a little creepy for most given age gap) but doesn't seem an issue to me. Doesn't appear he broke any Japanese laws(?) so guess it's just morally wrong.

I really believe the fact that you seem to be such a fan is causing you to hand wave a lot of things, it reeks of victim blaming. It doesn't matter why or when she came out, the fact of the matter is that he entered into what was potentially an illegal relationship with a minor depending on the age of consent of the prefecture where it occurred.

I've heard that laws may have changed, but at the time that it happened, it was not illegal for someone to have a sexual relationship with a minor. This is noted in the Friday article.

That said, I think her timing and motivation for coming out about this is quite relevant. She didn't come out about this because she felt victimized. One of the photos she provided to the tabloid was a selfie with Tomoya while he was asleep (which obviously was taken without his consent or knowledge). She did not look fearful in the slightest and actually has a bit of a smirk on her face.

As I've mentioned more than once, I'm not excusing what Tomoya did, but it's really hard to feel sympathy for the girl considering the circumstances around her coming out about this.
