The characters on your Voltron shirt are from Technovoyager aka Thunderbirds 2086. Can you tell that I’m old?

Bits and pieces of Dai Yamato and Yamato Resurrection (the whole feature film) have been posted on YouTube over the years.

Frankly, I don't think most anime fans are missing much.
There are good and bad parts of Yamato -- mainly the good parts are the first two TV series which are being redone are these reimagined shows (2199 and 2202) and perhaps half the classic films released through the mid-1980s but those were recaps or alternate tellings of the Yamato story.
The rest of it is forgettable...

I actually liked the live-action film but haven't missed owning Resurrection because, well, they never finished that project and never will. It's a curiosity but I didn't even think it was a very good one. It ends on one of the worst cliffhangers I've sat through. It's like sitting through The Empire Strikes Back (enjoying that film like I did when it was first released) but NEVER getting Return of the Jedi but having sat through a completely joyless Empire Strikes Back.

Again, what we got as the first two season of Starblazers in the US was the best Yamato -- and I hope someday that the original series DOES get released uncut with subs. It's long overdue for Region 1/A and hopefully someone gets encouraged to license a properly remastered edition of Space Battleship Yamato. The Voyager DVD sets of Starblazers are awful and they'll never option the remastered/restored original Yamato at this point. Heck, the DVDs they released of the classic movie series are transfers of worn releases prints (like most DVDs of movies have been; they've only gotten serious in the mainstream at doing restored/remastered prints from the master prints in the high-def era).
I would get the first two series but skip the third season.
Bolar Wars, the third Yamato season, was just not good from the start...

I picked up both the original separate three volume and later compiled volume of all five episodes of Dai Yamato back in the day because I had a feeling it was never going to be licensed, which sadly turned out to be correct. As I recall, I think there were minor differences between the credits of the two releases; I certainly remember those first three DVDs in the complete set weren't exactly the same older three separate discs simply repressed.

I suppose the Dai Yamato anime's extremely limited impact outside of Japan can be seen in the fact that, even to this day, no one has ever translated the series, even though it's only five installments long. Unlikely a prospect as it continues to seem, it would still be nice to somehow see an official release one day, since, regardless of its quality, it is a completed series. I guess we can file this one with the Macross sequels - ironic, as both productions could have genuinely ridden a (admittedly small) wave of genuine nostalgia in the U.S.

And yeah, I never bought the story that Funimation simply mixed up which Yamato movie they put out the announcement about either. I'm convinced they at least thought they had the rights, but given that it was three years before they admitted they didn't have the rights, *something* must have gone down to result in them eventually admitting otherwise. Why no one has licensed it even now is still an interesting conundrum.

Love the bootleg TB shirt! At least the original version of Technoboyger (all 24 episodes) finally got a home video release in Japan in the last few years, but I'd still like to see the edited and modified Showtime version get an official release. Still a bit of a puzzle that one, as I'm sure ITC still own the rights, and a great many of their series have had multiple home video releases across the years, but not TB2086.

Oh, come on, Mike! Why go with Trider-G7 for that fake Voltron shirt when you could have gone with Daltanious? That way, you could confuse people, but then legitimately say, "Hey, there was a pilot for Voltron made using this robot, so it's not a complete lie!"

As for the "other" Yamato productions, that definitely is a bit of a crazy timeline. Unfortunately, I doubt any of those, even Resurrection, will ever release outside of Japan, due to their legal problems, lack of interest in bringing over in the first place, & the whole insistence that everything Yamato anime has to be titled Star Blazers. I mean, it has to only apply to anime, since FUNi was able to release the live-action movie without that name, and Seven Seas released the Matsumoto manga under the original title, too.

I really need to watch the live action movie w/ Kimura Takuya, though I've heard it wasn't so good.

Anyway, Yamato 2199 really sets the bar for remakes: I can't thing apof any other anime remakes that have npbeen even half so good. It really is phenomenal--and every change they made, improved the series overall. It kinda makes me want to see SDF Macross remade someday, if only because SSF could be something truly special with better animation and a Minmay who isn't a screeching banshee most of the time.

I still haven't seen any of the 2202 stuff yet. Kinda bummed to hear it's not as good as 2199, but, admittedly, that's a pretty high bar.

Mike Toole's heavy handed criticism of Yamato 2520 in my opinion is unwarranted. This 1990s ova sports some of best animation you'll see in the entire Yamato franchise. The story is actually quite interesting and the characters are your run of the mill hot headed teenagers that were a dime a dozen in all mecha anime of that era (which is a good thing). It's definitely worth a watch but its greatest tragedy is that it was never completed just like Photon Sailor Starlight (another of those forgotten gems). You enjoy what you can, and 2520 was very refreshing. People always complain that anime doesn't innovate and just rehashes the same characters and concepts over and over again. Well that wasn't the case with 2520. The mech designs and backgrounds were amazing. There was a lot of style in this ova. Of course then we have the same fans complaing Yamato 2520 didn't copy enough classic Yamato. You simply can't win with stupid anime fandom's wishes.

Ark of the Stars NEEDS a Fathom release. I would so see it. Do it Funimation.

Also I watched some of Dai Yamato and the only interesting thing to me was that Mahoroba, a sort of "sister ship" to the Yamato shows up. Leiji did a manga about it back in the 90s which I'd love to see licensed even though it's short and doesn't have much of an ending.

Mike was talking about the Yamato 2199 movie Ark of the Stars/Voyage of the Celestial Ark, which has not been licensed here yet. You can import since it has subtitles but a stateside release would be nice.

I assume it's because the movie committee is different so a separate negotiation would need to be done, and I hope and pray it happens. (There's also Voyage To Remember but it's a recap of 2199 with a few new changes and not really worthwhile from what I hear, basically similar to how the 1977 Yamato movie was just a recap with some small changes)

Ark is also a little necessary to watch 2202 because spoiler[in one part Zordar is watching a recording of the Yamato being escorted by Gamilas, which is from the movie. Also, Berger, one of the commanders of the combat carrier fleet, has a role in the movie and shows up later on in 2202 with a modified Andromeda carrier named after the carrier he was in charge of]

It started pretty strong - the Battle of Pluto was really good stuff. The Yamato's launch and all the way up to about halfway to Iscandar is entertaining if not great. But once they get to Gamilon and Iscandar and the big Desslok reveal, the wheels fall off.

The movie runs headlong into the same problem that all the compliation movies have: squeezing 13 hours of plot and character development into 1.5. It just doesnt work.

Before 2199 was licensed, it was probably the best way to get into the franchise without having to go through the overpriced Star Blazers releases from Voyager. I showed it to my parents once (and they have zero knowledge of the franchise) and they enjoyed it and were able to follow it well enough. Granted, the movie radically changes around the second half of the story while keeping the main basic beats.

The best way to approach it is that it's a spectacle movie. Most of them, including the big Hollywood movies, tend to be at least a little bit incoherent.
