Great interview. So, is the game technically canon then?

Melty kind of sounds like Emilia, personality-wise, so I'm curious where the differentiation between the two is.
I was also kind of expecting the game original characters to stay, well, game original, so it's interesting that they might possibly appear in the books.

I think he purposely phrased it as he did to dodge that specific question. Tappei is working on the original story and working it into a format good for a video game. I think he would like it to be considered canon, but Re:Zero has such tight and well thought out writing. I’m betting he’s reserving to right to say that it isn’t canon in the event that the main story line would conflict with the game later down the line.
