fun fact: this abominable torture porn manga had a hand in inspiring Fist of the North Star with its setting and various aspects of *Street Fighter*; the infamous transvestite villain and her beast-man companion led to Poison and Blanka.
So like a lot of Go Nagai things you can't believe exist for graphic content, like Cutie Honey, this is technically a very relevant piece of work. |

fun fact: Violence Jack is Go Nagai's longest-running by a large margin, totaling 45 volumes across its original three serializations from 1973 to 1990, followed by another 3 volumes via short series Nagai did later in life. Violence Jack shows humanity at its absolute worst, and it's obvious that some people find that horrific & unacceptable... Which is the whole point of the series. You don't have to like Violence Jack, but it's not simply "torture porn". Similar to how Harenchi Gakuen was made to point out Japan's "culture of shame" during the 60s in order to remove those stigmas, Violence Jack is pointing out just how low humanity can truly become in order to remind people that we can all become better, lest we become the inhabitants of Violence Jack's world. And considering what's happened with a lot of people in the past few years, maybe we need a reminder of that by Jack himself, before things get even worse. |

I was introduced to this one (and Nagai Go in general) from the OVA series and didn't read the manga. Dunno if it's "better" but the anime didn't leave a good impression to say the least. It reminded me of Apocalypse Zero, which is the only piece of media I know has an F on this site.

Fun Fact: Violence Jack is a sequel to / spin-off of Devilman. Violence Jack’s world is the one that is created after the ending of Devilman, and Jack himself is a reincarnation of Akira Fuudo.
All-in-all, the two works depict a very damning commentary on humanity & the torture porn of Violence Jack is humanity being judged & punished in the worst ways possible. Probably also notable that this work vastly pre-dates The Walking Dead & The Last Of Us, two highly successful franchises that trade on depicting people at their worst. |

I saw the OVAs, and the only one that I didn't really find any good was Harlem Bomber, since it told a boring story. Evil Town is a rough watch, to put it lightly, but that's what makes it so interesting (& you see that Jack is indeed a good person in it, but the world around him forces him to be murderous), while Hell's Wind is easily the best of the OVAs, telling the best overall story. The Japanese audio also has a fun little bit of meta in that the villain of Hell's Wind is voiced by a previous voice of Jack. As for Apocalypse Zero, I honestly just find the OVA to be a lackluster adaptation of the manga, rushing through the first couple of volumes & losing some of the earnest emotion & passion that's found beneath all of the harsh imagery. |
