Seeing the cover I expect a reverse harem with a girl that can smash things around when needed.

There have been quite a few anime that have the mc get some special kind of blessing as a coming of age thing. The first episode of Gorilla managed to make that somewhat tired premise feel fun and interesting. A large part of that is the mc being a lively character and there being lots of small touches (especially the gorilla appearances) that make for chaotic fun. I look forward to seeing Sofia join the knights and use the power of monke to wreck things.

So the person that was the first one to go down that tower, I am pretty sure it is a woman. The person was referred to as "he", but is played by woman, I think we have Mullan situation here.
Anyway fun first episode, it is kind of a reverse Kaiju Number 8, the underdog recruit joining the group, only it is a girl and she is trying to fail. But both cases has a secret power up. And has a crush on the opposite sex commander. Last edited by zfunk on Sun Apr 06, 2025 4:59 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Episode 1
Yes, you can see the reverse harem forming, for sure. Sorry, Sophia, but I don't love your chances of failing the royal knight exam. It's kind of destiny, though, since her last name is Reeler which kind of sounds like gorilla. I see a trend for me this season where I'm sampling a lot of shows that I like enough to watch more without being sure I'll keep them. This falls into that basket. |

Okay looked it up, the actor is a male. But has voiced a lot of young boy characters in his career. |

Sounds like the fruit basket that you were back when I met you in...umm... 2023? Then you went on your "must sample every anime" kick, followed by your "must only sample anime I'm intensely interested in" cleanse fast, followed by your "omigod, I'm watching 28 anime this season!" cry for help. The point I'm getting to here is, "Kneel before me son of Jor-el!" No, wait that wasn't it... The point is, "Stop fighting and become one of us..." No, wait, that wasn't it either. The point is, Blood old buddy, to embrace change is to embrace life? Let's go with that one. Anyway, I liked this anime. I didn't think I was going to...there haven't been too many reverse harems with a bunch of pretty boys that I stayed around for. Fruit Baskets being the main one that comes to mind. That's right...I circled back to Fruit Baskets! Anyhow, Fruit Baskets had a different vibe than this show for sure, but they aren't entirely unrelated since there are people getting powers from animal spirits, and a kindhearted MC who's strong despite being a bit of a ditz, and classmates who are bound to get jealous when hunks start swarming around the MC like mayflies. No complaints. |

Yes, season by season, I attempt to find the formula that works for me. This season I'm back to trying anything that looks interesting so that I don't miss anything, but I'm also hoping I can recognize the ones I should dump after the 3-episode rule. I'll get it right one of these days. I mostly got it right last season in terms of what I watched to completion, but I have some nagging thoughts I should have sampled a few titles that I didn't.

That's probably the realization that twenty years from now, they'll be talking about all those bourgeoise cretins who didn't realize how Promise of Wizard was the animated crystallization of longing and loss, a rich metaphor for modern existence teeming with existential conflict and cries for social change.... Anyhow, I have a few anime that I liked well enough but that 'm not sure will sustain my enthusiasm. I hope they work out, but if they get into a rut or don't realize their potential, I won't stick with them to the bitter middle. The Beginning After the End. Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows. Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive? The Dinner Table Detective I'm the Evil Overlord of an Intergalactic Empire. I'm not even entirely sure that Upon a Witch's Death - whose pilot I liked a lot - will be able to avoid becoming formulaic if it goes down some "Touched by an Angel" route. But even if I wind up dropping all of those anime - and its very doubtful that I'll drop more than half - I still have around fifteen anime that I feel reasonably sure I'll like and will stick with even if they're not masterpieces, and the season isn't even finished debuting yet. And this anime is one of those. Sure, there's room to criticize it, but I didn't mind the things that were predictable or imperfect, and I have a good feeling about it. |

So far I have sampled 23 of the new shows, none of which I have dropped. However, of those, there are maybe only 6 that I feel pretty sure about going the distance with. It will be interesting to me to see what's still on the menu in week 4.

I only sample the good stuff but not sure which those are yet (to me). However, I got a kick out of James being reminded of Fruit of Evolution and I think of Kohaku in Dr. Stone whacking Chrome for calling her a Gorilla. However, reverse harems aren't my "cup of tea" so I'll have to wait for more input on this...

The previews where right, my favourite character so far is the Gorilla. He has got some great comic timing. An enjoyable first episode, I feel like it will need 3 episodes to know if the whimsical fun side will remain the main factor and to work out if the characters are enjoyable beyond reverse harem types.

I like the combination of chaos in school along with knightly training plus missions that episode 2 promises. Schooltime will be for interacting with the hunks while getting the stink eye from a horde of vixens and the training/missions should provide plenty of opportunity for the gorilla god to show off what she can do.
Sophia will likely not have any calm/relaxing times going forward. |

It's a bit unusual seeing the focus of a jealous high school mob being female. Usually it's a guy who's somehow caught the attention of the school belle. The most recent example I can think of is Medoka Kuroiwa is impervious just last season, but it's a long and established tradition, made most memorable (in my opinion) by the FFF inquisition from Baka and Test. Fortunately, it's a gag that's always good for a cheap chuckle or two.
I like this show well enough. My only grouse is that I'm currently watching four shows where the MC is an almost pathologically humble person despite having great strength. There's Sophia from this show, Philia from the Too Perfect Saint, Kurt from the Unaware Atelier Master and Beryl from Old County Bumpkin. That's a lot of humble pie to swallow. But then again, I'm watching almost twice as many anime as I usually do this season, so maybe they'll get mixed in. |

So if this a gender reverse Kaiju No 8, I guess Eddie is Shinomiya.
Anyway this show looks like a lot of fun. Poor Sophia, though she could run that school at a snap of a finger if she just told everyone everything. Though why are all the extras have no eyes, if you are not a character, you don't have eyes, which is why when Sophia was saying "look at all those glaring eyes", my thought was what eyes? |
