I was able to watch the first three episodes on the bigscreen last week. Based on that, I can predict this will probably be a mid show for me. I said in a different thread that I would like it to be funnier than I found it. And who knows, maybe I'll feel that way in episodes after the block I've seen.

I have read a bit of the manga and while it can indeed be hit or miss in that regard it also has some semi serious bigger arcs.

Yup, that is indeed Witch Watch: a combination of silly gags (mostly as a result of Niko's magic) plus a bit of romance and some conflicts and teases about more serious matter. I will keep watching since the jokes tend be more hit than miss for me and who does not love some silly magic failures. The animation is also good and some lighthearted fun is always welcome.

I enjoyed it. In some ways it's like the inverse of Witch Craft Works, an old anime that I liked a lot back when I was first getting into the medium. Y'know, the witch is the guardee instead of the guarder. The witch is the ditz instead of the silent, serious one. The threats aren't as funky and serious, at least not yet.
But I enjoyed the humor, the conversation with the father especially, but the ogre familiar's dry straight man routine and the goofy spell misfires too. My insta-drop ratio is pretty low this season. |

Episode 1
Unfortunately it was pretty generic (IMO), but I was not in the best of moods so I will stick around to at least Episode 3. |

As episode two showcased class 1-3 are a rather wild and varied bunch of people. They accepted a witch and ogre pretty easily including the use of magic. Even the teacher is a bit of an eccentric one but given the likely scenario of more magic failures in the future that seems like a necessity to keep the class functioning. It was nice to see both Moi and Niko be accepted, especially so in the case of the former not having pleasant experiences when it comes to being an ogre.

Episode 2 was much more fun than the first, so think this will stay on my watch list.

After seeing Episode 02, Moi reminds me a lot of Sousuke from Full Metal Panic. He's got that stiff, over-protective tough-guy vibe who doesn't quite know how to relax, which makes him a little awkward, but in a funny way. I also love the way all the secrets just come spilling out, and now, nobody has to worry about keeping anything from the rest of the school. I think that'll really open up the fun, zany, situations and/or misadventures even more. I'm also loving how referential this series is of other anime/manga, all the shounen franchise talk made me giggle quite a bit. This one is definitely good for laughs, so far.

As of episode 3 I can't tell if the magic witches wield is unreliable by nature or if Niko is just plain bad at using it. Yes, she often chooses bad moments to use magic but the spells on display thus far are dubious at best. Kanshi meanwhile seems to have joined the Niko defense force though almost all danger has been the result of magic.

I don't see any of the spells as being unreliable since they've performed exactly as they were supposed to. To me, all of the mishaps were either user error, or Nico not understanding their proper use.

The OP of the third episode really took me by surprise, it turned into an unfinished version.
I will also say that the episode got a laugh out of me when after carrying a single box in with half height, strength and intelligence, she then thought that splitting herself again would be a good idea. It was a good follow up of no longer having enough wisdom of what may or may not be a good idea, a little bit of fear that it might not end. |

Why did they have to change the subtitles. It is awful, white letters for a show that mostly takes place in the daytime horrible idea. Fix it.

The addition of the teacher, Nemu and Kanshi sure have made the show very lively. Each of the new characters is rather quirky and there is not a dull moment to be found. As episode 4 showed it can get somewhat dangerous at times too.

I can't believe it took me this long to realize that Nico's hair is supposed to look like a witch's hat
