Fate/Hollow Ataraxia actually got an English trailer back when the remaster was initially announced 9 mo ago to coincide with the Fate/Stay Night remaster launch. Should come out everywhere at roughly the same time.

I played Aero Fighters 2 at Broadway Arcade on 51ST ST in NYC in The 90’s! I always pick the Dolphin Pilot. Broadway Arcade was replaced by the Huge Broadway City Arcade on 42nd ST. That closed after there were late night issues. I am excited for this new Sonic Wings game. I never heard the original Japanese name before.

I don't know if this is just me or my friend circle, but I'm a little baffled as to how Fate has remained ever-present in the anime world all these years. I keep seeing collabs pop up left and right, and yet the couple times I poked my head in to see what was going on, it seemed like a string of incredibly generic excuses to have epic fight scenes playing out over & over.
Quite frankly, I'd always thought Tsukihime was the stronger story. If I ever saw Melty Blood pop up over the years, Arcueid tended to be the main headline character on the box or logo right? And yet I never seem to see her in the different game crossover collabs. A friend was pointing out recently that in spite of Fate having all of these new games/shows/movies over the years, it seems like any time a crossover collab happens, the only characters/outfits that make it in are the 3 or 4 blonde-blue/twintail/red characters over & over, and not really any of the latest or new ones that showcase newer aspects of the series. I've been seeing these outfits on repeat since the PSP days of Phantasy Star Universe, holy crap I feel old. I can speak from the perspective of a Naruto fan - they've officially run the series into the ground. I've been taking the time to comb back through early season 1 Naruto, and comparing it to Boruto now is nuts. Apparently the original Naruto creator isn't writing the new stuff, the art on Boruto looks waaaaay similar to a JoJo series now. The anime is desperately trying not to alienate (I put a dark pun in there, did you catch it?) its audience by keeping the art style similar to Shippuden's, but then when a character that is original to the Boruto manga (usually villains) pop up, they look more JoJo and out of place.... As someone that really loved non-filler Naruto over the years, the series has wholly and completely become unrecognisable on every possible level. When I see modern Fate stuff, it really vibes me as being in a same spot as Naruto/Boruto is now - it just seems so visually nonsensical, and I can't really grasp any means of entering back in and catching up on what's new with it. It seems soooooo far off from what that little Type-Moon visual novel was decades ago. Pointing a new/fresh fan towards Gundam is sort of easy - you either just watch Universal Century in release order, or pick something standalone like Wing or Orphans to start with and see if you like it. |

To be fair, even the original was basically a thin excuse for a bunch of fights. It was practically a tournament set-up! Almost every other Fate anime/game is pretty much the same set-up but with different characters and settings. I honestly don’t think modern Fate is that radically different except for Fate/Go and the magical girl spinoff. |

You're just overthinking it, and like with anything that seems popular but you yourself are not personally into, people like to come up with reasons for why it's probably bad and dumb and not worth your time haha. Everyone does it so I'm not calling you out personally, but I'm just calling it what it is. Fate has remained ever present simply because back in 2011-2014 the series launched itself into the mainstream with the ufotable anime's Fate/Zero and Fate Unlimited Blade Works. And ever since has released a steady stream of stuff that obviously people vibe with and enjoy. And of course most recently, the original visual novel just got its first official release, opening up the series to even more new fans. That's all it really takes to build a solid foundation of fans.
Is it not normal for a franchise that does a crossover with anything to always use the main faces that made it popular? 2B continues to be the go to Nier crossover character, and Gundam is still shilling Gundam Wing even though it was 30 years ago. Street Fighter collabs still always feature characters from Street Fighter 2 not any of the newer faces. It's pretty common for collaborations to go with "old favourites" than the newer characters. Discovering those newer characters is your reward for choosing to engage with the franchise on a deeper level. And even then, you're actually incorrect because Fate DID use the newer characters for a collaboration, Melty Blood Type Lumina had Mash, Ushiwaka, and Edmond Dantes made playable characters for it's crossover with Fate Grand Order. All of whom were made after 2015, and none are "that blonde-blue/twintail/red character". The more you know!
Gundam is absolutely gargantuan compared to Fate and I would say getting people into Gundam is also extremely difficult. "Just watch UC in release order" yeah sadly, most people aren't down to just casually go and watch a show with 42 episodes from the 70's haha. But I do agree that it's important as fans to be able to act as guides and recommend stuff to newer fans that are curious and asking these questions, to make getting into the franchise fun and easy. With Fate, it's also extremely easy honestly, easier than Gundam for sure. If you're okay with visual novels, just go read the original visual novel, it's available on Steam and it's where everything started. Like with watching UC Gundam in release order. If a visual novel isn't your cup of tea and you'd rather start with an anime, watch Fate/Zero or Fate Unlimited Blade Works. I personally started with Fate/Zero so I'd recommend that myself. See, wasn't hard at all. |

Ah, Hotel Dusk, another name I haven't heard in some time. I know they renewed Trace Memory's trademark before they revealed the remake, so we'll see (especially after the ArcSys leak which...showed a lot of things). Also makes me think of this bit of programming which reveals how a seemingly impossible puzzle was done:

How does the T-pose teen wipe their butt? Why am I the only one asking the hard-hitting questions here?
Also, Steven Universe was a damn fine cartoon. Never got much into the sequel series though. |

Katamari Damacy was one of the most unique and quirky Japanese games ever with catchy, fast paced music but the creator's new game looks like the most safe, American corporate art-style indie game ever. Seems like such a complete opposite from what you'd expect. It does not look good at all...

Just like a lot of niche becomes popular things, Fate got there from a confluence of factors including luck imo. Were some of them not present, it would probably still be a mainstay franchise which gets a remake/spinoff once in a while but not a juggernaut as it is now.
It came at the right time in the middle of the VN golden age, cementing itself as a mainstay in otaku circle, then came FGO which also come at the right time right at the infancy of gacha game revolution and becoming the revolutionary in the storytelling in that genre, which also leads to several high production anime which was by that time a relatively new studio and the new composite visual style approach they took really appeals to the modern anime audience. Perhaps the most important factor imo, is how easily the world setting and the characters can make the jump into the mainstream into not just the core chara otaku demographic but also mainstream shonen brained demographic, to the point that the original core demo often disses the new demo that "it originates from a porn game you prudes" or things like that. At that point the quality of the original kinda barely matters. Like I would agree that Tsukihime is better and there are also several better visual novels, but I doubt the average Fate fan now would like to discuss at length the themes of heroism of the original instead of discussing power level and marveling at animation quality. |

Note that I've never actually played Fate myself. But I think the reason people love Fate so much is because of the characters. Weird, I know, especially because Nasu's writing reads like instructions for a stereo. But all of the quirky characters stuck in people's minds, and people love their shtick. Saber being a dry straight-man (who eats like a garbage disposal). Rin being the prissy expert (who is easily flustered). Taiga ('nuff said). The whole dynamic between Sakura and Rider, with Rider becoming Sakura's Servant and surrogate big sister. Medea and Souichiro. Archer teasing Rin. I think it says something that even in spite of all the doujin for all of the new flavor-of-the-week Servants that pop up in Grand Order, people still have a degree of affection for the original crew. Heck, that Today's Menu For Emiya Family exists and is as beloved as it is should illustrate how much people love the F/SN crew as goofy sitcom protags in need of a lot of fix-fics.
I think this is valid! I also preferred Acrueid over anyone from Fate from the longest time, and it bummed me out that it took so long for Arcueid to even get acknowledged. As for the Saber-faces being so popular, I suppose there's nothing to it but the extent to which people really, really love Saber.
Dammit! The worst part is that I made this same kind of mistake last time I talked about Ataraxia, too--confusing Bazette and Karen with Kirei. And I was really keen on not doing it again. |

That's definitely the truth, I think Nasu's story writing is just okay, even he's said he'll just "make things work" when writing stuff. Sometimes it can be hilariously unique in some ways (oh no a big crisis is happening! Time for some unrelated SoL shenanigans!), but where he absolutely excels is his character writing, and making characters believably and interestingly multifaceted. I mean just look at how beloved and interesting Kirei Kotomine is (and Jouji Nakata and Crispin Freeman's performances as him), when at a surface level he's evil priest guy, which is a tried and true trope. But Nasu just writes him in such a way that you can't help but "get" him sometimes, you know? And then FGO is just like, the perfect match and output for that kinda stuff. Gacha games live and die on being able to sell their characters in an elevator pitch, so being good at writing them goes a dang long way. Thanks for sharing that! I feel like I'm the only one in my wide swath of video game friends who's even heard of this franchise, (I even bought the EU-only sequel!) and I shove it in everyone's faces the same way I did before Ghost Trick and TWEWY were more widely available. Make my dreams come true, Nintendo! (As an aside, this is why I REFUSE to trade-in my old DS and 3DS.) |
