It seems every series I have seen that has to do with witches has seven sages. This could be in the same universe as Once Upon Witch's Death, but obvious hundreds and hundreds of years earlier.
I mean Louis just passed the buck to Monica, and she just won't call him up on it. And this backstory he gave her, it is more complicated than it has to be. This other girl going to have to play a villain, granted that can be fun when it is a play when people know you are acting everyone love to play a villian, but that poor girl going to be hated. I hope Louis lets her have a face turn later on. Let me add to your backstory Louis, the Duchess daughter is jealous of the close relationship that Monica's character had with her mother, and had a distant relationship with her mother, and takes it on Monica. That is a the excuse you can give when we turn her face later. |

It's a pity that Monica is such a doormat because otherwise she would have told Louis what he could do with his demand he take over bodyguard duties for him, but then I guess we wouldn't have a show, would we? Characters like Louis tend not to have wives, but he does and her indifference to his devotion for her amuses me. Love the outside of Monica's crib. Characters like Louis tend not to have wives, there is a reason for that. Characters like Louis normally are attracted to men.

No, I don't. My initial comment about characters like him not having wives is that so far he is coming off like a dill-hole and he seems sort of young. I'm not reading any anime gay off of him, monocle or no.

I had my doubts about this show based on the trailer - mainly, if the shy, stammering thing is the primary focus and the show is a one trick pony, it will get old fast. Ooh, I can't wait to sit though episode after episode just to see the witch come through when it counts.
But this anime has more than one arrow in its quiver, For one thing, the monsters and magic systems seem kinda fresh and are rendered well. That white glowing doorway effect before she unleashed her miracle all over the ptero-things was pretty cool. The dragon wasn't anything new, but damn, they made it look awesome. And it looks like the supporting characters are fun too. When that noble daughter collapsed after she was saved, she really did seem like a kid who was forcing herself to be brave but was still a kid. And when she cheerfully announced that she was going to bully the MC to death to help her in an over the top fashion, it was fun. The other sage we saw was pretty fun too, as was his wife. Obviously good people on some level, but not too good. Very much their own characters, and owning their characters. Cool. I'm hopeful. |

That was a great first episode. It showcased how Monica is very much not suited for the mission personality wise (as of now) yet given that magic show at the end she has the power needed to protect the prince. Given that it is going to be a school filled with nobles I expect plenty of problems (her made up status does not help either). The other characters indeed seem to be fun and it sure looks gorgeous. Magic wise I wonder if her being able use magic without a chant is more due to her being a genius or really wanting to not speak (or both).

Obviously both. If she wasn't a genius she couldn't have accomplished the feat. If she really didn't want to talk in public she wouldn't have had the incentive to figure it out. She probably would have spent her time researching something associated with numbers. |

I get that but I mostly meant it in regards to the magic system. In other novels/anime there is usually one of two magical systems in place. The first works on numbers and logic with the spell often consisting of several processes. The other is the imagination/faith system in which being able to form something in your mind makes it magically possible. Given that Monica could thrive in both it makes me wonder (hell, maybe the answer is both again), thus I hope that the magical system gets a bit more explained.

As best I can tell, strictly numbers and logic. There is none of the "visualize it and it will happen" business. My impression is that it is like computer code. When you chant the incantation you are reading off the coding. Monica can hold the equivalent of pages of coding in her head and executing it without chanting. Those magical circles are the equivalent of the coding written down. Add a bit of mana and it executes. This is from hints, mostly in the first chapters. That child's nursery rhyme is a mathematical equation. She is reciting it to distract herself from the flying. Adding four and five digit numbers in her head while remembering what level she is on and what the last sum was. |

They've put a lot of love into this show - the quality of the opening and closing pieces tells that much, and I can see why. I still like the supportive Villainess fan girl, and the supporting cast of characters is expanding and shaping up pretty nicely too. I liked the "Noveau Riche" girl and the prince seems like a schemer, which is a nice change from the boring Mr. Perfect types that have been dominating a lot of the female protagonist fantasy romances I've watched lately.
My only irritant is that I've seen a lot...and I mean *a lot* of shows with near terminally shy characters lately, male and female, and the scenes after stretched out scenes watching the MC try to talk for comedic effect aren't as amusing as the writer intended, at least not for me. I also get that the other sage probably sent Monica to the academy for her sake as much as the second prince, and I like that, and the show has enough going on that I like it too. |

Okay I am going out on a limb here, but consider they had similar crazed looks in the eyes, I think Aaron and Selma are under the influence of some brain washing spell. A spell that messes with their brains but not completely enough that they still have memories of what they did, thus can feel guilt and fear when confronted, so they will still confess, and thus the master mind has scrap goats.
And don't look know, but Cyril had the same look in his eyes. In episode two Monica and Nero were talking about a spell like that. |
