The most annoying thing about the giant bust of Speed Racer's head is that it remains, to this very day, the literal only way to physically own both the original 1967 Mach Go Go Go with English subs (DVD & BD) & the 1997 reboot Mach Go Go Go: Restart with English subs (DVD). You can watch MGGG '67 via streaming today on a service like Tubi, but to physically own it still requires one to actually buy that monstrosity, while Restart has never had a streaming option over here to begin with.
Today I still own a few of the old school art boxes, mainly for stuff that hasn't had a modern re-release (& likely never will), but nowadays I don't really care that much for specialized limited edition intricacies, minus some specific exceptions (like LOGH, since there was no other option, or G Gundam, because it's a personal fave). Just give me the show via physical media & I'm generally happy in 2025. |

I'll say this, when it comes to anime and physical media (particularly limited edition), they can get somewhat crazy if not ridiculous crazy on the memorabilia that comes included in the limited edition physical media.

I seem some sets that I bought. Upgrading from DVD to bluray offered enough of an excuse to get the premium one. Unfortunately, the sets with the standout memorabilia seem to be dwindling away. Limited editions are still around, but it's more likely to be things like art cards, maybe a pin or patch, etc. and the ones with the stand out merch are reserved for the few series that get the premium (three-figure price) treatment.

I too miss the days of getting physical media that had more than just some art cards or some other small token. I can’t remember the last time I got something different. |

I managed to collect all of the Lucky Star t-shirts back in the day, and it cost me a pretty penny (especially for the last volume, which was weirdly limited). My wallet definitely appreciates the lack of special edition things, especially because, while the stuff is cool in the moment, it loses it's allure pretty quickly.

One of my first purchases was a Grenadier season-set that came with a small Rushuna figure that I have yet to remove from the box, some 15 years later. Shortly after that, I managed to get my hands on some of the Bandai releases of Ghost in the Shell: SAC which included various little figurines, including the Tachikoma that still sits at my desk at work. Shirts, panties and toys notwithstanding, though, I DO hope physical media continues to make a comeback. I'm old enough to be ornery about the increasing need to be online for everything. Sometimes I just wanna watch my shows and listen to my music without being someone's data point, you know? |

The very first figure I acquired was the Major that came with one of those Bandai dvds. It may not look impressive in comparison to figures sold on their own, but for a high school kid just starting any collecting, it was pretty cool. |

I don't think I've ever bought any anime (or other film/TV) special editions, partly because of the price, partly because the extras never seemed all that appealing. I do own a couple of video game special editions and the standees, CDs, and mini-artbooks tend to just get packed back in the box after I've had a look at them. They're nice, but rarely all that big an upgrade over the regular edition of the game.
Modern Blu-ray packaging is amazing, but I do feel like discs pop loose more easily than they used to. I recently bought all five seasons of Babylon 5 and the case only takes up as much space as one season of the old DVD sets. |

As a speed racer fan i can confirm it genuinely sucks. i was lucky to find 60s MGGG with dub on both DVD & on Blu-ray from the collector's edition at a thrisft storebut i bet someone sniped MGGG 1997 before. Also it sucks as a LOGH fan that LOGH only physical release was limited to 1,000 units & cost 1,000 canadian because Sentai made the packaging nearly impossible to store because at least with speed racer head you could put it on top of a a shelf & it would like statue of a real racer to those who haven't seen it. |

I think so too. When I get a new anime set in the mail, one or more discs are consistently loose. They haven't arrived damaged, but something like that used to be pretty rare. I think the center part has become shorter, so there is less material holding the disc. |

While I don't have a Holo coin, I do have a Heaven coin from the original "Panty & Stocking" Blu-ray release. Apparently it was limited to preorders.

Ah, the Haruhi artbox. I actually have that in my apartment, only instead of the four season 1 singles, I managed to squeeze the season 1 complete collection, the season 2 complete collection, and the movie inside it!

Don't forget about the Gantz ball! That's the one I always think of for awkward packaging. I suppose that the Giant Robo one is similar, but I think I saw way more of the Gantz balls in the wild.
I think the weirdest packaging I own is the one for Ghost Slayers Ayashi. It's not too bad since it's box shaped, but it has a lip and a knob to the top that I have to be careful about putting anything near. I don't think anything would balance on top very well without damaging the roof. I would actively avoid the ones that I couldn't figure out how I'd store at all. |

While collector's/limited editions are nice, I find most of what you get pointless. I never play soundtrack CDs because I can just get that on YouTube, booklets are nice, but I hardly ever re-read them. Art cards and posters serve little use as taking them out means that the amaray or digipack moves around the case. The only major appeal for me is the digipacks, and they seem to be becoming less common where I live, plus you can get them as standard editions as well.

As massive as my physical media collection is, I own almost no limited/special editions, and most of those were from the RightStuf bargain bin. I don't really care about the random little tchotchkes that come with them, I just want the discs in a basic case. I don't have enough space to store big boxes anyway, and I'd much rather own multiple regular series releases than one expensive one. I'm still incredibly pissed at that insane LOGH release that never went on sale even once.
