I think that music grade should be higher just for the theme song alone! But I do think this is some of Kensuke Ushio’s weaker work. At his worst he’s good but he is usually amazing so anything less than that is noticeable.

Of course, it's obvious from moment one that Reze is more than she seems. Denji has nothing to offer as a person--he's naive, lacking in education, and kills devils for a living. A young, beautiful girl isn't just going to throw herself at him for existing.
This is ... not influenced by real life. Denji, for all his flaws is A. a famous hero who has saved untold numbers of lives and B. is actually a good person at heart who bears no ill intentions towards anyone and is just a lonely kid who wants to be loved. In real life, young handsome men and young beautiful women fall head over heels for people that are far less than famous heroes and are actually bad people who do purposefully hurt others, even if they justify it as "revolution" or "revenge." Another thing: consider the setting. Comic book fans have long agreed that Batman is only an acceptable figure because of the nightmare that is Gotham. Put him in a better setting like Superman's Metropolis or Flash's Central City or Wonder Woman's Gateway City and Batman, who lest we forget has TONS of beautiful female suitors all over the place, wouldn't be tolerated five minutes. Well Chainsaw Man's "Tokyo" makes Gotham look like Dorothy's Kansas. So that statement is so far from both real life - where before the social media era (which I guess to someone under 35 is probably akin to when dinosaurs roamed the earth and fire was a precious commodity) infamous criminals used to get marriage proposals from total strangers - and that of comics/manga to be unbelievable. |

Glad it seems like the movie did Reze's arc justice. Just from the trailer alone it looks fantastic.
Even Metropolis had a Gangbuster...sometimes. |

I mean, yeah that basically answers it; this was like a 12-13 chapter arc that didn't have most of the cast doing a lot stuff, unlike the previous two storylines(and especially the spoiler[next one]). I haven't reread this arc in a long time, but I'm going to give this a watch with that in mind, and try to ignore all the hype surrounding the film version. |

Great to see it turned out well.
Hopefully this doesn't take too long to come to streaming or BD. I just picked up the series and want to give it a rewatch before the movie

Kinda shocked there is no mention of Tatsuya Yoshihara’s direction in the film in contrast to Ryu Nakayama’s vision for the series. The series was somewhat polarizing due to its more grounded, somber approach to the material. The manga is more bombastic and silly but sprinkles in moments of ernest emotion( not dissimilar from Bojack Horseman). Do you feel the movie is similar to the show in terms of tone and direction? I’m guessing it’s either a bit different or a combination of the manga and tv series sensibilities.

Watched it in IMAX, thankfully without 3d bullshit. Probably the most entertained I've been this whole year. If anyone has a chance to watch it on a big screen - do it, this is the kind of movie where it does make a difference.
When it was announced I was a bit annoyed, since for me CSM manga got good for realsies only after this arc, and movie scheduling would inevitably delay further adaptation. Still kinda true, but they did pull out all the stops for this one, this is not your typical "we stitched together 4 TV episodes" cash grab, it's an actual bona fide movie. Honestly, this shouldn't have been a thing to praise, but a standard of the industry instead, but here we are anyways. Agree with Richard on a "lesser arc" point, which is funny, since this is, likely, second most popular/beloved arc in the series (right after spoiler[control devil arc] - final arc of the public safety saga). But this is a straightforward storyline with most of its themes articulated out loud directly in text, oh, and also there is a hot girl who throws herself at the MC. So there is a substantial slice of target audience for which it will be peak fiction, no surprises here. The meatiest part of the arc is the movie marathon date with Makima, but it is not particularly important in the scope of the movie itself. Character design/artstyle changes are alright, bit too safe and close to manga for my taste, but it gets the job done, especially with good character animation and overall solid direction (I'm especially fond of the shot of a raindrop falling presented like a plane dropping a bomb). Kinda funny that it ended up being not that much different from season 1 presentation-wise, considering all the whiny wittle babies who went "oh, they killed the artstyle since it was supposed to have splashes of acidic colors like volume covers do". Well, movie does have these colors. Roughly in the same proportion as volume covers are to the entirety of manga, lol. Can't argue, it looked hella dope, although one such moment did feel a bit too fanservicy "look! we did the thing!" (spoiler[Static shot of Chaisawman riding Shark devil]). It is a fun thought experiment to ponder how would S1 artistic sensibilities fare here, especially in the first half of the movie, but nevertheless, I'm happy with what we've got. And honestly? None of it really matter, since what everyone will actually remember is batshit crazy action packed second half of the movie. Holy mother of sakuga, what do they feed those animators? I can't wait to scrutinise it frame by frame on sakugabooru after BD release. And it just kept going and kept escalating. My only nitpick is some hit or miss OST choices, especially one segment of a battle where it went "nondescript Hollywood blockbuster orchestral soundtrack". Would gladly rewatch it on streaming later on, so I can enjoy original VA as well (Ukrainian dub was solid and didn't diminish my experience, but I'm a sub purist for movies in general, not just anime). |
