OK, after reading this review, I think this is good enough to add the game to my wishlist when I get a PS5 Pro.

I just hope in DQII they toned downed Wack, Thwack and their Ka counterparts because mid to end game that was the single worst balance issue I've encounter in a good game. The Final boss with Full Heal and unlimited MP just put hot sauce, lime, lemon and salt into the wound.

I'm glad these remakes turned out well!

I never got to beat Dragon Quest II on the GBC back in the day, but I heard horror stories about how unbalanced it got near the end and how many enemies would use Sacrifice/Kamikazee or Thwack to just stop you cold.

I also appreciate James pointing out that they changed how Zoom works. That's my biggest bugbear with these remakes; Zoom not working indoors has a balance purpose, because that means it doesn't work in dungeons. In the late game, this doesn't mean much, but in the early game this adds a ton of weight to your decisions because now you have to weigh using a spell to get out of a jam versus keeping enough MP on standby in case you need a quick Evac. As much as I love accessibility options, this is a choice I dislike because it flattens the game and removes one of those more "fun" bits of player antagonism.

Regardless, I'm glad these remakes turned out aces. I cut my teeth on the Dragon Warrior I&II remakes on GBC back in the day and they've informed my tastes on RPGs ever since. I've yearned for that particular remake to be made available again (or any of the other GameBoy Dragon Quest titles, really). I'm glad that, in the absence of those versions, we have these stunning HD-2D versions.
