I remember when Stargaze first came out there was some worry from fans of the older Trigun that the fandom would devolve into a constant "which one is better" battle (similar to what happened with FMA), and instead it turned out that the fujos who jumped on with Stargaze watched the original version and loved it too. It still warms my heart to think of it.
Also I'm shocked neither Coop nor Chris found an opportunity to post the wall of Punishers standing like a weeb version of Golgotha from the Studio Orange panel at Otakon 2023. |

As a guy who admits loving the original as a kid I kinda felt in season 1 that the writers seem to hate Vash considering how miserable some episodes portrayed him and there was not much room for a gag. This seems notable when comparing opening songs but I couldn't believe how lighthearted was the Stargaze opening. When Vash reunited with his friends in Stargaze I was kinda moved since for the first time he looked happy after so many episodes in Stampede. Still, Knives' state sure creeped me out.

Personally I stuck with the original manga and anime. I couldn't stand the animation and all the changes the CG reboot did. Clearly not made for fans of the original. I hope newer fans who've only seen the remake check out the original and find out why it was so loved though.

Trigun is in an odd place for me. Watched the original anime first. Loved it. Cemented Madhouse as a great studio for me. Then I bought two omnibus volumes of the manga and... I just couldn't get into it. The art style felt rough and combined with the paneling I often felt confused about what was happening. Now, there's a new anime with two seasons, and I... am largely uninterested. I almost feel bad about not giving it a shot, but the edgier direction I've heard they took the series just rubs me the wrong way.

The Trigun/Trigun Maximum manga is one of my favorites. I wish we had gotten a proper adaptation, but the original TV series is decent enough and I guess Nightow didn't want to do a straightforward adaptation. I watched the first few episodes of Stampede and wasn't impressed, so I doubt I'll be watching Stargaze.

Trigun's one of those series that is on my perpetual backlog. I've been going "I should read the original since I hear its different" since I first watched the first anime and now I'm 20 years older, watching Stampede/Stargaze and still going "I should read the original since I hear it's different"...

The original would be the manga not the 98 anime. All the same no one misses out if they choose to only engage with only one of the 3 options (manga, first anime, Stampede/Stargaze). |

I am a longtime fan of Trigun. The '98 anime was my favorite for a long while, then I got to read the manga and the '98 anime just didn't do it for me anymore. The manga was better in all ways. SO naturally I have always wanted a 1:1 anime adaptation of the manga. But I've swallowed my pride and watched Stampede and Stargaze and I am really enjoying them. I feel I am set to enjoy Stargaze more than Stampede since it covers my favorite parts of the manga, even though it does it differently, I can still see the bits that have been moved and visualize their manga counterparts. The lack, so far, of one of my favorite Gung-ho Gun encounters from the manga is disappointing, though.
Regarding Badlands Rumble... I love it. It's a fun side mission that fits easily between episodes 11 and 12 of the '98 anime. Assuming, of course, you aren't squick'd by Vash's methods of trying to get Amelia to leave/save her life. |

Love the 98 anime and much later, I found myself really loving the manga for taking things even further, but I really don't like how Stampede/Stargaze has handled the story and its characters, especially Vash as the protagonist. The CG animation was never an issue for me because I was absolutely in love with Orange's work with Land of the Lustrous and I was plenty optimistic when they announced their Trigun project but that enthusiasm slowly dissipated the more episodes I watched.
Kinda wish Bones just did a straight up adaptation of Maximum in the same vein as FMA: Brotherhood, especially after seeing their good work with Kekkai Sensen. |

I started Trigun with Stampede and then continued with Stargaze. Both felt somewhat lackluster, so to understand the hype behind the series, I started reading the manga. And boy—they are very different. I’m not talking about the story or the characters; the entire tone is different. If they had kept that tone, I believe the new anime adaptation could have been marvelous, especially since the logic behind starting the series with Stampede is actually genius, imo. However, compared to the manga, the new adaptation just doesn’t quite cut it. From the clips I’ve seen, I suspect the old anime is closer to the manga in terms of tone, so I might watch that afterward.
