Most fascinating. If I'm not mistaken, Cream Lemon is the 2nd Hentai anime in existence. Quite the seminal work, actually (OK, pun intended).

I would like to add that the stories in Cream Lemon seem more interesting than a lot of the stories in later harem works.

Cream Lemon wasn't my formative hentai OVA, but I did come across a few episodes in the Kazaa/Morpheus era of file sharing.

Cool Devices was my, not sure I'd say my first experience, but one of the first. I also read the old ANN VHS reviews of it. Episode 2 had a pretty hot incest story which may or may not have contributed to me not being repulsed by sis-con stuff. And of course there's that one episode by Yasuomi Umetsu.

IIRC Project A-Ko started as a Cream Lemon bit before they decided the story didn’t need the porn and fleshed it out into a more general superhero parody. To me that says they were thinking about these plots as more than just an excuse for naughty stuff and genuinely wanted the storytelling to work.

Media Blasters is still hanging on and used to have the Kitty label, too. Some of their current licenses are on the raunchier side.

There really are some surprisingly interesting early erotica projects out there. The Rance series is one that comes to mind that also started in the '80s and I think is still coming out with stuff.

I remember being quite surprised that I got invested in the plots of the Ai no Kusabi OVA and My Sexual Harassment. Ai no Kusabi in particular had such oddly fascinating worldbuilding.

I have to admit that I've watched a couple of Cream Lemon episodes, aside from its explicit content, I find it very interesting that a lot of well known animators and seiyū worked on them, like Toshihiro Hirano, who directed episode 7 with help from his wife, though considering other things Hirano directed at the time, like Megazone 23 and Iczer-1, it wasn't that surprising. Still, the '80s sure were the Golden Age of anime, or at least the most experimental, artist were allowed to make artsy porn with sci-fi elements, while at the same time working on more mainstream works, though I did hear that even to this days some mainstream animators and artists ocassionally work on hentai.
And speaking about the international distribution of H anime, being from Latin America I have to say that despite anime's huge popularity, there were very few attempts in bringing hentai in an official capacity. I've heard that Cream Lemon did get an official sub release on VHS in Brazil in the late '80s and early 90s, but dubbing hentai was unheard of, and I don't think it was because dub VAs didn't want to, professional Neutral Spanish dubs of live-action porn do exist (they're rare, but some VAs have confirmed it). I think the reason was due to the fact that the anime home-video industry in Latin America is very niche.
Spain did dub some hentai like Bible Black, but very few were dubbed into Latin American Spanish, the most well-know is Darling, which was actually dubbed into Neutral Spanish for the U.S. market, most of the VAs weren't well-known and they used stage names, but it was pretty obvious that the main character was voiced by a well-know VA, Óscar Flores, and he actually gave a lot of information in various interviews, so he isn't ashamed or anything, in fact he made tons of jokes about the recording process, but he did mention that there were plans to dub more hentai into Neutral Spanish, but they were never released.

Probably one of the craziest but natural moments of sex in shonen manga is Shaman King as Yoh and Anna conceived when they were barely 13. If Yoh became the Shaman King he would have died and thus needed to keep descendants. One of the animators of Boruto also has a thing for drawing adult scenes of Naruto and Hinata since he saw them as a good couple but I can see why the demography would find it too much.

There is also Gantz whose author had a sex fetish apparently. Even the first episode had a horrible harrassment. With Netflix these type of scenes became more common even in Castlevania. Berserk also had multiple sex scenes to the point of including an attempted incest. Tomino's Gundam novels also had multiple sex themes that even deal with Sigmund Freud or whatever Amuro was thinking with Sayla but I don't remember sex scenes in the novels. Ironically, the Gundam with the biggest amount of sex appeal is the pacifist Turn A Gundam where a woman keeps seducing enemies and even tries to attack Loran like if Tomino predicted parts from Monogatari.

I got confused at first and thought "But wait this is already on DVD" when I realized I was mixing it up with Cool Devices. Which has some interesting episodes as well.

I first heard about Cream Lemon 20-25 years ago when I came across a blog post about the "Escalation" story, but have never actually seen any of it. I missed it being added to OceanVeil's catalog, so I'll have to check it out.

Also, full agreement on DiscoTek preserving more old school hentai titles like this and Urotsukidoji.

My reflexive answer to the question in the front page blurb was, "Way the hell better than it is now." It's astounding how much better smut looked during the 80s OVA boom than the overly-shiny barely-animated garbage that's crapped out today. Granted, things back then probably had a hundred times the budget. Laughing

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the biggest surprise I got when I discovered the existence of hentai anime. When I first discovered its existence it didn't shock me that much, at that point during my teenage years in the late 2000s TV channels like Animax and others showed some ecchi series, like Ikkitousen, Musumet, and I even some shows from my childhood, like Dragon Ball and Ranma ½ did have a lot moments with their female characters. Also, Gantz, which aired on Animax Latin America, didn't censor the scenes where female characters got their breasts exposed, and that before I knew of the existence of hentai, so my initial reaction when I discovered it was more like, "Oh yeah, why I'm not surprised". But I wasn't prepared to discover the Japanese censorship of genitalia in hentai, when I first saw I though to my self, "Why?", and then I learned that it also applied to live-action content, and I thought it was the most ridiculous thing, but as they say, you get used to, and I then I discovered that hentai got distributed to other countries where its shown uncensored.
Side note, I also never understood all of the tentacle jokes, because the majority of hentai that I managed to found, which were actually hosted in normal anime sites, never had any of that stuff.

Yeah, as much as I'm not a RETVRN sort of person and think that ills change and reshape themselves, but ultimately you can find lots of crap in any era (to really simplify my thoughts), I do feel like the median smutty or ecchi work of yesteryear is generally if not superior, better to look at and/or more interestingly visualized. Which really sucks, as someone fascinated by representations of sexuality and generally crass stuff and whatever else you want to call it.

Basic ignorance and the insistence on that be correct (not unusually with some xenophobia, even amongst self-described anime fans), regardless of how based in reality it actually is. "Anime is all muscled men shooting lasers and upskirts and twee swooning schoolgirls" but for porn.

That is very much true, I was there. It was called "Sonhos Molhados" ("Wet Dreams"). Got a handful of episodes.

It's great that this is finally available to be viewed officially! I believe the 80's was a really transformative period for anime in general, and this series played a notable part of that.
It's a bit of a shame that many modern anime fans likely won't consider the significance of these OVAs to the medium's history just because they're "hentai".

The only entry I've seen in Cream lemon was Pop Chaser, and it was excellent. The first Hentai series, Lolita Anime, has a great ED, very city pop

The general saying is that H-anime looked way better in the old days than now, but H-manga looks better now than the old days.
