Yeah I’m also a bit frustrated by again having Will have to deal with completely unfair people and systems again, even though it’s a pretty common storytelling structure for shounen manga specifically. You know the one the main character overcoming obstacles and keying into his powers to defeat a huge enemy, only for them to run into another roadblock where they have to learn how to actually control their power through a training arc where they inevitably succeed against this new trial, rinse and repeat until the end of the story. This trope does work but you have to be careful with it, and I feel like the writer slightly miscalculated its use in this specific case.

I’m also pretty confident in what’s going to happen for the rest of this arc. Will is going to train and defeat the monsters, but Kruetz still won’t be satisfied so they’ll have a duel and Will will win. I’m also 100% confident that he’s not going to end up in the Ice faction, I’m pretty sure he’s going to end up in the Thunder faction. I mean why else would he be so significant in the opening sequence, and have that scene in this episode where his subordinate asks why he didn’t choose Will, and he smiles about how, those who start from the bottom and struggle are the best. I mean why include that if you’re not going to have Will end up in his faction. The question is whether or not Elfaria gets annoyed at this, or is completely OK with it because Will is part of a tower?

forget annoyance. the real question is: does she go full blown yandere mode by the time this season is over? or not!?

for these temper tantrums and her absolute obsession with will remind me of princess renner from overlord who have made sure to keep her true nature from the public eye, including her love interest.

i would not be surprised at all if that four eyed racist ends up mysteriously vanishing out of nowhere later on in the season due to elfie's machinations!

Humorously enough, Colette is the homewrecker here while Elfi is the blue-haired childhood friend.

I'm glad you and your reviews are back, James, even if I tend to like the show a bit more than you do Smile I was worried when all your stuff stopped at once.

Lmao, so true, this is frying me here. I love how Makeine has permanently altered the way we all talk about harem-ish romance.

Ok, I'm glad we'll finally see Magia Verde members doing something other than passive-agressive bickering and aura farming. But, both narratively and by real-life logic, it's better for Will to join any other faction than Elfie's. Considering lighting mages affinity for close quarters combat it does seem like the best fit, so I fully expect Will to end up there.

although, this here is the fight that manga and light novel fans were waiting for which means the staff will pull out the stops foe this one!

also the glasses guy better pray that's not the case for he will take the blame in elfaria's eyes and will more or less be a dead man walking.

This trope does work but you have to be careful with it, and I feel like the writer slightly miscalculated its use in this specific case.

I get that it's a trope, but Will had five faction people give him their blessing at the First Bloom and glasses guy somehow was able to override them, including one of the Magia Vandor. Then we find out the following week that said glasses guy is also not a magic faction leader but the leader of the no-colors department that couldn't ascend the tower, and yet all the factions backed down for him?

We didn't really see any other objections to the other candidates, so this obstacle felt like an ass-pull to keep Elfaria separate for a while longer (turns out it was even only for two episodes).

All the discrimination up until now at least kind of made sense within the world, even making him participate in the First Bloom itself. But surely they also all saw what he did to defend the tower, right? To object at this point is absurd.

I'm not saying everyone will now treat Will with sunshine and rainbows, and he'll probably face discrimination in the future. But the type and nature of it should've changed to match his changed status in the story world. I imagine simply making it into a faction isn't the end goal here.

(For example, if he had made it into the ice faction, would people have thought it was due to his skill or Elfaria's favoritism?)

In terms of this spring season, the fight between Elfaria and Zeo is up there in terms of pure spectacle. Yea, the cutting to the peanut gallery for commentary is annoying, but this is in almost every battle type series I've ever seen. I'm just happy that we've finally have gotten a chance to see Elfaria be an actual character now with this and the flashback. I honestly don't think she'll win, Zeo is a better match for him anyway, but seeing her push so hard to get her bride and showing the same guts Will does made me want to root for her.

I guess the magia vander can just do whatever they want for the most part, so this probably doesn't matter, but I do find it a bit annoying that in the previous selection round they established that if multiple factions choose the same person (I guess for those who can cast multiple elements), that they get to choose which faction they want to join. It's not decided for them.
Doesn't mean it hasn't been a fun fight to watch though Laughing

I will point out that the only one that didn't want Will to join the first go around was Zeo so things going differently when he decides he wants something isn't that out there. Dude decides he wants something and he's the type to not take no for an answer.

...these are the people running the country?

I have mixed feelings about this season. It definitely felt less focused than last season where Will had a goal and a bunch of obstacles, but they all seemed fairly telegraphed in advance. The entry into the tower this season has been a long series of setbacks that seem primarily designed to delay Will and Elfaria's reunion as long as possible. Elfaria can certainly put up an impressive fight, but her petulance is a bit of a bad look for a faction leader. I guess that's why the title card for ep 11 said the glasses lady beside her does all the actual faction management.

Now that the initiation hazing is out of the way, I am somewhat hopeful the new goal of rooting out the traitor(s) will help focus the third season a bit more, though I highly doubt sixty freshman college kids are capable of keeping the investigation secret. The upside of Will being in the lightning faction is we'll hopefully see more Lhianna. The side cast from last season didn't get to do much other than stand on the sidelines all season, with the exception of Julius who I actually liked more this season than last.

The big problem here is anime having to strictly follow episode counts in batches of 12 or 13 episodes. (So if you want more than 12 or 13, it must be whole second batch making it 24 or 26) and the lack of flexibility in episode counts. If S1 was 17 episodes (the 12 it got + the first 5 this season spent on the attack plus graduation) and this season was a full 12, it would've been better. But because it has to be 12, this season was left to end the academy arc with the attack and graduation and start the tower arc with the first bloom + training + 2nd bloom and Zeo and Elfie's fight and WIll getting into Zeo's faction. This happens because source materials (manga in this case, but also LNs for LN adaptations) aren't written thinking about anime adaptations and pacing things so an anime has proper stopping and starting points for each batch of 12 or 13 episodes, so sometimes adapting means ending episode 12 or 13 of a part in a bad spot or the 12 or 13 episodes of a part not amounting to much. Just adaptation problems
