That's the real tragedy of Kana Akatsuki: she was born to write elated yuri, but has chosen to fill her works with the most uninspired hetslop imaginable.

Personally I don't like her Yuri either lol

Wait is there any at all? I mean, is there any yuri of committed, non-accidental and non-baiting variety in her works.

Explicitly canon, not to my knowledge.

Honestly, considering the romance was one of the things people were selling about this story I strangely felt more baited by Rosei and Hinagiku than whatever was going on with her and Sakura. It's strange, no matter how unimpressed I was by it especially when it repeated the same highlights like 3 times, the author did try to significantly develop what drew Hinagiku and Sakura together through all the stages of their life, but for their love interests it's like she thought blushing and pining was enough development and shipped them off to be lovey dovey. They're carried more by aesthetics than chemistry. Apparently with this being an ensemble story other agents should show up past their main arcs but I honestly don't care about anyone besides Ruri and Ayame.

Rosei not killing Misuzu was less about mercy and more because she literally had the bomb codes and they needed that shit. Apparently in the novels they got it out of her by torturing her boy toy until she squealed the truth but I guess they thought that would murder the pacing and wanted to give Rosei more things to actually do so sure. That said, it does make all the time he was wasting in the previous episodes more baffling if he can just insta freeze a whole building without a single chant.

Misuzu feels like 5 different ideas haphazardly stapled on top of eachother, just a baffling character. I hope she never returns to the story.

Heavily disagree with the reviews, I enjoyed this twisted darker tale on how the seasons work. It played up the mellow drama sure but it was far from the shitshow James is complaining about. I gave it an 8/10. It definitely got me in the feels at times and I really wanted that mother villain lady to die horribly.

I feel kinda bad for James. It seems like series that win in the popularity vote at the beginning of each season that no other writers want to review he winds up getting assigned. This is the 2nd show I know that I've watched where James was chosen to review that he was bascially forced to hate watch. I've always had issue with handing editorial decisions off to popular vote, but it seems like if there is a series that wins the vote that no one wants to cover, just make the editorial decision to not cover it. James is a great writer but IMHO it doesn't serve anybody well to force someone to review something they're just hating, neither the writer or the reader.

Ok, I feel like this discussion pops up every time high-profile show gets negative weekly reviews, and occasionally even escalates to the point editorial staff has to drop down in the comments and clarify obvious thing that no one in fact is "forced" to review something against their will. And I'm pretty sure I've seen Lynzee specifically clarifying that if there is a show which made the cut, but everyone is adamantly against reviewing, they would either drop it, or look for someone outside the regular writers.

And also these are people doing a job and getting paid for it, so reviewing a thing you are not particularly fond of is par for the course to any professional reviewer. So situations when there is truly no one to review a thing are probably few and far between, and require something with notoriety of Redo of a healer.

Btw, it didn't even felt to me like James "hated" AotFS, more like he's been continuously baffled by its artistic choices and tried his best to see a method to the madness only for show's issues to keep stacking up. It's just that he has emotional style of writing this things, so either positive or negative critique might come a bit too strong sometimes. Ironically, we've had a good examples of an opposite situation this season with Rebecca's reviews of Warrior Princess. They are written in a calm and collected manner, so while it was obvious she didn't like the show, one would suspects she was rather indifferent to it. And then she brutally eviscerated it in her Worst Anime of Spring write-up.
