Yesterday, I encountered a website article about how their was a survey in Japan of like the best anime characters. Goku, Luffy, Naruto, and Astro Boy were on the lists. I've searched over and over with various keywords but to no avail. Anyone know the article's name?

It would be much easier to dig it up in the following folders than Googling with those vague keywords:

Thanks Dormcat but I just found the article. It's at AnimeNation.com. It's "If You Could Become An Anime Character". Oricon surveyed 900 people on which anime character they would be and not too surprising, Son Goku (who is considered the most famous, popular, influential, and powerful anime character ever depending on who you ask) was number one.

Could someone translate the list?

Sure, here you are:
- Son Goku (Dragonball) - Doraemon (Doraemon) - Monkey D Ruffy (One Piece) - Nobita (Doraemon) - Edogawa Conan (Meitantei Conan) - Tsukino Usagi (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon) - Heidi (Alps no Shoujo Heidi) - Lupin III (Lupin III) - Asakura Minami (Tacchi / Touch) - Satoshi / Ash (PokeMon) - Kyon (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) - abunai I'd have picked Oji-san, of course. Or, just maybe, Takemoto Yuuta. |

Kyon, really? I'm surprised he would be on a list of characters people would like to be. spoiler[The idea of the fate of the entire world hinging on keeping one tempermental, very high maintenance teenage girl constantly entertained is my idea of a perpetual nightmare. ] That being said, I loved the show. I just wouldn't want the responsibility.

Spoilers, please. Not everyone has seen the series. That depends on how you view it. Remember, the whole story is being told through Kyon's eyes. I've always thought that spoiler[perhaps Suzumiya Haruhi was just his "imaginary playmate", and that Kyon was, in fact, the supreme being -- having deluded himself into ignorance of the truth.] - abunai |

Oops. Sorry about the spoilers. I ususally try to be extra careful about that. You have an interesting take on the plot. I hadn't really considered that possibility, but it does kind of make sense. I'll have to watch it again with that in mind sometime.

...Monkey D. Ruffy? Ah, Japan.

Or Denmark. Not everybody transliterates ルフィ as "Luffy". - abunai |

Pardon my ignorance, but why is it Ruffy, but not Rupin? Is it just translator's personal preference? |

The Lupin name comes from an earlier French work (Lupin III is supposed to be the grandson of the original Arsène Lupin character). |

I knew that too... That's what happens you don't think before you type. But in a more general sense, is it basically the translator's discretion when it comes to L vs. R? |

From my understanding it is since the letters are interchangeable. hence why the Japanese always refer to Kilala from Inu Yasha as Kirara. I suppose with dubs they use which ever letter sounds better when the word is pronounced vocally. And in the case I mentioned above Kilala does sound better then Kirara IMO. |
