I asked these questions on a different message board and was met with no answers but a lot of rude responses, despite the fact that I believe these questions are fairly straight forward.
I've searched around quite a bit, but I can't find any specific answers to my questions, nothing that answers them definitively. 01. The Bleach DVD box set says that it contains episodes 1-20. But, there is also a sticker on the front of the box at the store I work at says that the box set includes "Five episodes only available in this box!" Is that true? Are there episodes that are only in the boxset? And if so, is there a reason why they're not releasing all the episodes in both formats (single disc and box set)? I theorize that the sticker may be old, perhaps from before some of the episodes were released individually, but with no specific released date showing up in the computer system, I can't be certain. 02. I see that there is another Bleach Uncut Season 1 Box Set coming out in a couple of weeks. Is it any different from the one that's already available? They both seem entirely identical. Is this just a reprinting of the first box? And, less specific question. How has the fan reaction been to the Bleach DVDs in the US? I have read some reviews saying that they're good DVDs, but nothing specific from fans. I'd like to specifically know what people who downloaded the fansubs think of the quality of the subbing on the DVDs, since fansub fans seem to be the hardest to please. |

I have no idea what that sticker means on your DVD set. Maybe there were five edited episodes, so it means you can only get the 5 uncut episodes on the boxset? My boxset had no such sticker on it.
I think the one coming out is the standard edition. When the boxset first came out, it was available as a limited edition only, and like its name, only a certain number were made and released. I believe it sold out pretty quickly. The June one will come with only the DVDs and not the extra wallet chain that came in the LE. The Viz sub translation seems okay; the main thing that bugs me is that they translate names to the same name consistently (e.g.: they always translate as "Orihime" even if the person is saying "Inoue"). This is annoying as it takes away the Japanese nuance of using a last name vs. a first name, or a switching of honorifics as people become more casual. |

Thanks for letting me know this. The sticker seemed like it matched the rest of the packaging, but this being the case, I'll have to check it again. It's entirely possible the sticker was just placed on the wrong box.
That does sound a little annoying, but if that's one of the biggest problems with the set, it may well be one of the better sets out there these days. Thank you for answering my questions. |

I think the releases available now are the same as the one supposedly coming out June 10; checked it out and they have the same UPC code. As kyokun703 mentioned the original Limited Edition release came with a wallet chain and is pretty rare now(I have one unopened |

I think this is a case of certain B&M stores getting special versions just for them. Even though the only "official" release, and the only one you could find online, was the limited one with the wallet. However at places like Best Buy(where I spotted standard edition box sets the same time the limited ones came out), they probably had both editions printed just for them. I am sure the same was true for Wal-Mart, FYE and the like. It's sort of like you can only buy certain omnibus editions of certain manga at Barnes & Noble. Yet when you go to the publishers website(Del Rey for instance), they make no mention of any such volumes ever existing. Nor can you find them anywhere else. Except B&N.com of course. |

A specific example would be Best Buy having a version of Hellsing Ultimate V.1 that was the limited edition minus the figurine exclusive to them. |

My set didn't have any stickers on it as far as know. I think I would have noticed a sticker telling me about getting bonus episodes and such.
Well in a couple months the second season is due out. Got mine pre-ordered already since there was a recent sale on VIZ stuff.
Well, the video quality is definitely much better than watching it subbed that's for sure. I've had no reason to watch my discs subbed yet as the dub is okay so I can't compare it to the subbed episodes I watched. Maybe on the next rewatch. |

Well is this second run of the first box set also at a lower price point? I can't help but notice that the same show, with the same number of episodes has two different prices for set 1 and set 2. Rightstuf has the June Set 1 to be $49.98 and the Aug Set 2 to be $69.98 and that's not the limited edition one with figure.. that one's $89.98.
So, I just find it a little hard to believe, but not impossible, that there would be a $20 price difference between them, unless the reprint was also a new price, trying to make a few more sells. However, this is all speculation on my part as I can't seem to find a price for the original set 1 in my quick look for one. |

I got the original set (The one with the wallet chain) for $30 something at deepdiscount.com when it first came out. They'll probabally do some drastic markdowns to set 2 once they get it in their books.

The other thing that's kinda of annoying is that in some instances they randomly decided not to translate things. I can understand things like zanpakuto, but it took me a while to figure out they meant Urahara when getaboshi (sandal hat/hat and clogs) started appearing all of a sudden. The little Shinigami Cup shorts also don't appear on the DVD's even though the next episode previews still talk about them. |

It's a shame, honestly, but I really don't expect things like that from US anime companies. I haven't the slightest clue as to why these simple little things are never included on anime DVDs in the US, but I'm so used to them not being released that I don't even notice most of the time. Is there any difference between the special features of the single discs and the box set? My quest to find answers about the box sets has lead me to actually watching the first few episodes of the series and enjoying it. Now, I am just trying to decide if I want to purchase the box set or the single discs. |

Shinigami Cup shorts, Shinigami Encyclopedia? When do these extras start?

Encyclopedia starts pretty early, around the time we first meet Byakuya. The shorts start when they run out of Shinigami to introduce. |

I didn't recall the Shinigami Cup bits starting until decently well into the Soul Society arc. If the first box only goes to episode 20, I don't think any of them originally had Shinigami Cup segments. |
